As a die-hard fan of NCIS and someone who has followed Mark Harmon’s illustrious career, I must say that Austin Stowell has truly impressed me with his portrayal of young Leroy Jethro Gibbs in “NCIS: Origins.” Having seen Harmon breathe life into the iconic character for so long, it’s refreshing to see a new interpretation while still maintaining the essence of Gibbs.
The first two episodes of CBS crime drama “NCIS: Origins” premiered on October 14, introducing Austin Stowell’s young Leroy Jethro Gibbs at the beginning of his Naval Investigative Service career. Reviews for the prequel series have been positive, and judging by the charming cast and the intriguing story, the NCIS universe might have yet another winner on its hands. A lot of the show’s allure hinges on how well Stowell captures the essence of Gibbs — but if you ask the character’s original actor, Mark Harmon, the younger performer’s star quality was already obvious when he auditioned for the role.
In the room, I got a slight jolt upon Austin’s entrance, prior to him uttering a word, as Harmon expressed when recounting Stowell’s audition for People magazine. “He stepped out, and someone remarked, ‘I’ll simply put it, he’s a screen icon,'” Harmon shared, amidst stiff competition from many talented [contenders].
Austin Stowell puts his own spin on Gibbs
It’s fortunate that Austin Stowell appears to have won over Mark Harmon, as it seems the newcomer has brought a fresh interpretation to Leroy Jethro Gibbs in “NCIS: Origins.” The younger Gibbs is distinct from Harmon’s portrayal, and the premiere of Season 1 demonstrates that while the character maintains his signature stoicism, he’s subtly masking his grief by putting on a brave front.
In the series, Harmon serves as the narrator and offers guidance to the character Stowell, who remains distinctly similar to Gibbs. This connection ensures a smooth transition from “NCIS: Origins” to the original “NCIS”. The immediate positive response to Stowell during his audition bodes well for the future of the prequel series.
