3 Gotham Characters I Would Absolutely Love To See Popping Up In The Penguin (And Even Matt Reeves’ The Batman)

As a long-time fan of both Gotham and the intricate web of characters it has spun, I must say that these potential cast additions for The Penguin have me all aflutter!

As someone who’s been hooked on HBO’s gripping dramas for years now, let me warn you about a potential spoiler for their latest series, “The Penguin”. If you haven’t watched it yet and don’t have a Max subscription, beware! This show is not to be missed. It’s the kind of drama that keeps you on the edge of your seat, drawing you in with its intricate plotlines and captivating characters. I’ve seen my fair share of HBO series, and “The Penguin” is definitely one of their best. So, tread carefully if you haven’t had a chance to watch it yet!

As a devoted fan, I can confidently say that The Penguin’s first four episodes have not only matched but surpassed the high expectations set by Matt Reeves’ The Batman. It has become a beacon of pride and optimism for DC fans who felt let down by the box office performance of Joker: Folie à Deux. Currently, it’s making a strong case to be in the Top 10 of the 2024 TV lineup so far. But you know what could make it even more captivating? The inclusion of characters from Gotham City!

I know, I know, this is as much of an exercise in Bat-futility as fighting for Gotham to survive beyond its five seasons. But while Robert Pattinson’s solo Caped Crusder feature was often a bit too dour for Gotham’s over-the-top shenanigans, Colin Farrell’s Oz Cobb and his underworld could provide a more perfect union between the two universes, if only in my well-intentioned headcanon.

A Purr-fect Story For Later

As a die-hard fan, I’d like to share the thoughts of Camren Bicondova on her decision not to reprise her role as Selina Kyle in the Gotham series finale. Here’s how she put it: “Looking Back, I Am Completely Satisfied with My Choice Not to Return as Selina Kyle for the Series Finale.

From a dedicated fan’s perspective, it’s one thing to assume that “The Penguin” series wouldn’t bring forth other significant Batman characters from comics and folklore beyond the Falcones and Maronis. However, the fourth episode astonishingly introduced, and mercilessly eliminated, a less frequently used antagonist who played a crucial role in Sofia’s Arkham Asylum stay. (Interestingly enough, this character made an appearance in “Gotham” as well.) Now, let’s delve into the actors and characters I believe would fit seamlessly within showrunner Lauren LeFranc’s vision for the Gotham City universe.

Donal Logue’s Harvey Bullock

Donald Logue is a versatile actor who consistently enhances productions with his talent, rarely appearing in poorly received projects. He’s an ideal choice for entertainment enthusiasts because he can deliver both comedic and dramatic performances exceptionally well, holding audience attention. This makes him unlikely to be overshadowed by the accomplished actors like Colin Farrell, Cristin Milioti, and others in any joint project.

I can’t help but keep reminding myself that Harvey Bullock was nowhere to be found in “The Batman,” which has been over two and a half years since its release. It’s as if Bullock, such an iconic counterpart and enforcer within the GCPD in almost every portrayal of Gotham City’s law enforcement hierarchy, was actually present on screen. Alas, he remained absent from that film.

There’s no necessity for the creative team behind “The Penguin” to brainstorm an entirely fresh take on the character. Instead, they could opt for a familiar version that exhibits less underhandedness and douchebaggery, yet avoids being overly sycophantic or costume-focused. Interestingly enough, this character has been waiting in the wings all along, and he bears a strong resemblance to Donal Logue.

Morena Boccarin’s Dr. Lee Thompkins

If you felt disappointed that Morena Baccarin didn’t have a larger part in Shawn Levy’s film “Deadpool & Wolverine”, you’re not the only one. In fact, this isn’t the first time her characters have been associated with dangerous and morally ambiguous lives. Interestingly, in the series “Gotham”, Baccarin’s character, Dr. Lee Thompkins, wasn’t just a bystander; she was deeply involved in chaotic, action-packed storylines that transformed her from a romantic interest to a sinister ally of Ed Nygma.

Regardless of the story’s quirks, Baccarin’s professionalism made it shine, and I believe she could bring the same weighty presence to ‘The Penguin’. Character like Lee Thompkins could be either beneficial or detrimental in this context. Although neither the Waynes nor James Gordon are present in Oz’s TV universe, this show does feature Theo Rossi’s Dr. Julian Rush, a psychologist who already exists within it, albeit with a questionable reputation.

Based on how Rush’s narrative unfolds and if he continues to be a supportive and active influence for Sofia during the season, it’s quite plausible that the series might introduce Leslie Thompkins. Her role could either involve scrutinizing the other doctor’s methods or attempting to persuade Sofia towards her own philosophies.

Drew Powell’s Butch Gilzean

In much the same way as many characters from Gotham City did, actor Drew Powell could transform even the most boring scenes into hilarious ones with his portrayal of the defiant enforcer Butch Gilzean. This imposing and intimidating man brings authenticity to the role because he is not only physically imposing but also clever and charming. It’s safe to say that if Butch were to step into The Penguin’s world, he would likely rise through the ranks quickly, perhaps even becoming a made man by the end of his first episode.

At the conclusion of the series, “Gotham”, it was unveiled that Butch was actually the disguise for the zombie character Solomon Grundy, which certainly added a wild and unexpected twist. However, most viewers might prefer if The Penguin skipped over the Slaughter Swamp storyline and instead focused on Powell’s more human-like portrayal. It would indeed be fantastic.

Surprise Fourth Entry! Cameron Monaghan’s Jeremiah Valeska

Absolutely!

In a series akin to “The Penguin“, given its abbreviated season run, it would be an ideal fit for either a brief storyline or a single-episode role for Monaghan in a flamboyant characterization. This is a grittier crime drama that has drawn numerous parallels to “The Sopranos“, but Jeremiah Valeska exhibits a more tranquil and subdued demeanor compared to his brother, with fewer visible scars.

It’s possible that Barry Keoghan’s brief role in “The Batman” is laying the groundwork for a more significant Joker storyline in “The Batman: Part II,” potentially making Cameron Monaghan’s early version of the Joker less relevant. However, the talented Valeska brothers from “Gotham” are so magnificent that it seems unlikely. But in unpredictable situations like this, we go with the flow and trust the chaos.

The Penguin airs Sunday nights on HBO at 9:00 p.m. ET.
