The Fantastic Four: First Steps Set Photos Reveal Retro Human Torch Suit

As a seasoned moviegoer with a soft spot for the Marvel Cinematic Universe and a penchant for retro-futuristic aesthetics, I must say that the first glimpse of The Fantastic Four: First Steps has left me positively smitten. The departure from conventional superhero costumes, particularly Joseph Quinn’s Human Torch, harkens back to an era of sci-fi that I hold dear – think late 60s and early 70s B-movies with their quirky charm and unabashed optimism.

First Footsteps as the Human Torch.

In these newly released photos from the set of “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” it’s the Human Torch who is strolling along the scenic coastline of Durdle Door. While it’s unclear if actor Quinn is actually wearing the suit, the vintage outfit certainly aligns with earlier leaks. Instead of the traditional blue one-piece costume, the new look for the Human Torch resembles a character from an early 70s sci-fi series or a space suit’s inner garments. This change in appearance is likely Marvel Studios’ way of distinguishing their “Fantastic Four” from previous live-action films. With Disney planning to release this movie, one can’t help but wonder if they’ll also offer Fantastic Four pajamas – a tongue-in-cheek suggestion, of course!

A concerning pattern in contemporary Marvel Studios movies is the excessive reliance on computer-generated imagery (CGI) instead of practical superhero outfits. However, it appears that this won’t be the norm for Fantastic Four: First Steps, given the unveiling of the new design for the Human Torch. Despite a physical double being employed for The Thing during filming, it should be noted that the rock-like superhero will actually be a computer-generated effect derived from motion capture technology. However, the majority of the team is expected to don real costumes that the actors can wear, unless they are utilizing their powers at the time.

The Fantastic Four Take Their First Steps Into the MCU

Indeed, The Fantastic Four appear as expected. Ever since Matt Shakman, known for “WandaVision” and “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” took on directing the film “First Steps,” there has been a hint that this movie would veer away from previous adaptations. Some speculated that the superheroes might be trapped in an alternate dimension. While this is somewhat true, The Fantastic Four hail from their own universe, which blends futuristic and retro elements. Marvel is already priming fans for a journey back to the 1960s, as it seems Earth’s strongest heroes are also a tightly bonded family of four in that era.

Beyond Joseph Quinn portraying Johnny Stormh, “Fantastic Four: First Steps” introduces Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, Vanessa Kirby as Susan Storm, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm. The supporting cast includes Julia Garner as the Silver Surfer and Ralph Ineson as Galactus, along with John Malkovich and Paul Walter Hauser in undisclosed roles. There’s speculation about how this film fits into the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe, but Kevin Feige has confirmed that the superhero team will appear in the next two Avengers movies.
