Venom 3 Concludes Eddie Brock’s Story, But The Director’s Comments On The Film’s Big Bad Have Me Hyped For What’s To Come

As a long-time fan of Tom Hardy and the Marvel universe, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia as we approach the final chapter of the Venom trilogy. Six years ago, when Tom Hardy first donned the symbiote suit, I never imagined we’d be here, with Knull, the creator of the symbiotes, ready to make his grand entrance on the big screen.

Six years ago, Tom Hardy re-entered the realm of superhero films after his portrayal of Bane in “The Dark Knight Rises,” moving on to star as Venom in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSMU). Now, we’re only a few days away from the conclusion of Hardy’s tenure as this Marvel antihero, with “Venom: The Last Dance” set to debut in the 2024 movie lineup later this month. To mark the end of such an era, a truly formidable villain is required, and according to the final trailer for “Venom 3,” that role will be taken by Knull, the symbiote creators. This revelation alone is exciting, but director and writer Kelly Marcel’s remarks about Knull’s involvement have me even more eager for what’s to come.

The story for Knull, as seen in the Venom movies, is expected to continue.

Initially, Knull was on our radar, but it was crucial for us to establish Venom’s character and his bond with Eddie first, prior to bringing in Knull. The story of Knull is just unfolding now.

Introduced by writer Donny Cates and artist Ryan Stegman in 2018’s Venom #3, Knull is an ancient entity who fashioned the symbiotes from the remains of a Celestial he killed using his weapon, All-Black the Necrosword. Despite the weapon appearing in Thor: Love and Thunder, it had no connection to Knull in the MCU. Now, it’s time for Knull to take center stage on the big screen. As stated by Kelly Marcel, after Venom: The Last Dance, this formidable adversary will continue to play a significant role in upcoming SSMU stories, which I’m excited about given his immense power.

Given that “Venom: The Last Dance” hasn’t been publicly screened yet, Kelly Marcel couldn’t reveal too much about spoilers. However, she did hint at a few things regarding how this movie will establish Knull as a more formidable menace, and added that Eddie Brock’s story was intended to reach its conclusion in three films.

As a die-hard fan, let me tell you, we’re treading into some exciting territory with this movie and I can’t wait for you all to experience it! Now, I know how significant Knull is to us fans, so rest assured, just like we built a solid base for Venom, we’re doing the same for Knull. The King in Black is not just a one-time threat; he’s too powerful for that. In this film, you’ll meet Knull, but it’s merely the start of his epic tale. Marvel’s most formidable villains are developed over time, and that’s exactly what we’re doing here.

Given the significant role Knull played in Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman’s Venom comic book series, some might ponder why the SSMU would reintroduce the villain for future movies if Eddie Brock is no longer present in this universe. However, Kelly Marcel’s plans will be executed through other characters, as she stated.

It’s clear that the fans are aware of numerous symbiote tales yet to be told – the cosmos is vast and intricate, and a single film wouldn’t suffice to portray Knull fully. After this trilogy concludes, there are more narratives waiting to unfold – the divine is on its way.

Keep in mind that just because Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock is heading out doesn’t mean the Venom symbiote is going away. My guess is that someone else will bond with the symbiote either by the end of The Last Dance or in a future story, and that person will be the one who clashes with Knull down the line. But like Kelly Marcel teased, there are many more symbiote stories, so both a new human protagonist and a symbiote we haven’t seen yet, like Scream or Mania, will come into play. Whatever’s being cooked up, count on seeing a lot more of Knull.

The sequel to “Venom,” titled “Venom: The Last Dance,” will hit theaters on October 25th. For those who haven’t seen it yet, you can catch the original “Venom” on Disney+. Meanwhile, if you’ve already watched “Venom: Let There Be Carnage,” you can find it on Sling TV.
