Dirty Dancing Star Jennifer Grey Reveals Whats Happening With the Long-Awaited Sequel

As a cinema devotee with decades of film-watching under my belt, I can’t help but feel a twinge of nostalgia when it comes to the announcement of “Dirty Dancing 2.” The original film, released way back in 1987, was more than just a romantic drama – it was an experience that transported us all to Kellerman’s Resort and left us longing for a summer fling with Johnny Castle.

Star of Dirty Dancing Jennifer Grey gives an encouraging word about the forthcoming sequel to the cherished movie. A sequel to the 1987 hit romantic drama was announced in 2020, with Grey involved both as a cast member and executive producer. Initially slated for release in 2024, Dirty Dancing 2 experienced a delay due to Hollywood strikes. Since then, there has been limited information about the upcoming film. At the London Film Festival premiere of her recent project, A Real Pain, Grey provided an update:

I don’t have a lot of details about Dirty Dancing at the moment, as I prefer not to make any commitments. I’m just keeping my fingers crossed that they’ll finalize everything soon, so it’s accurate. We can discuss it further when we talk again, hopefully with all the details sorted out.

Despite a slight delay for the long-awaited sequel to the 1987 movie “Dirty Dancing,” fans can find solace knowing that Jennifer Grey and the team are dedicated to preserving the spirit of the original film. Starring Grey as Frances “Baby” Houseman, the story unfolds at a Catskills resort in 1963 where Baby falls for dance instructor Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze). The film was a massive hit, earning over $200 million on a budget of just $5 million.

The original movie, “Dirty Dancing,” continues to be cherished for its enchanting soundtrack and dance sequences, along with the spin-offs it produced: “Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights” in 2004 and a 2017 remake starring Abigail Breslin and Colt Prattes as Baby and Johnny. Regrettably, neither of these films managed to match the success of the 1987 release, leaving both critics and viewers underwhelmed. Fingers crossed that “Dirty Dancing 2” finds its groove.

Director Jonathan Levine, known for films like “50/50”, “Warm Bodies”, and “Long Shot”, is slated to direct the upcoming sequel. At present, Grey is the sole actor linked to the project; however, in 2022, she hinted that some of the original cast members would reprise their roles and that “Dirty Dancing 2” would continue the story in the same location as the first film.

“You can expect to find it at Kellerman’s, possibly revisit Kellerman’s, with an older Baby among the cast. Characters from the original story will make appearances as well. This creates a challenge and excitement.

Absolutely, circumstances might have shifted since those earlier remarks, but having Kelly Bishop reprise her role as Baby’s mother, Marjorie, would undoubtedly bring a sense of nostalgic pleasure. Regrettably, Patrick Swayze passed away in 2009 following a fight against cancer, which means the romantic storyline from the original movie will likely be revised. As we anticipate Baby returning to the dance floor and introducing both familiar and new faces, Grey’s current project, “A Real Pain“, directed by Jesse Eisenberg, is now playing in theaters. In this comedy-drama, Eisenberg and Kieran Culkin portray awkward cousins embarking on a tour across Poland to pay tribute to their grandmother.
