Doctor Who Star Ncuti Gatwa Teases Season 3 Return

Doctor Who Star Ncuti Gatwa Teases Season 3 Return

As a long-time Whovian, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and anticipation as the news about Doctor Who’s future unfolds. Having grown up with this iconic British sci-fi series, I’ve seen countless Doctors come and go, each one leaving an indelible mark on my imagination.

As a passionate fan of time and space adventures, I’m thrilled to share some exciting news about the future of my beloved series, Doctor Who! Fresh from his historic stint as the Fifteenth Doctor last season on Disney+, Ncuti Gatwa has hinted at more “wibbly wobbly, timey wimey” adventures to come, despite no formal renewal announcement yet. In an appearance on The Graham Norton Show, Gatwa revealed that production for a third season under the Disney-BBC banner is set to begin in 2025. “Everything’s going smoothly,” he assured us during the show. Here’s hoping for even more thrilling journeys through space and time!

This year, we completed the second season, and later this year, we’ll have our Christmas episode. We’re planning to start filming the third season next year.

The fresh installment of “Doctor Who” was labeled as ‘Season One’ after Disney+ secured global broadcasting rights. This is the fourteenth episode since the show’s return in 2005 and the 40th season in total. The episodes that aired from May to June 2024 received mixed responses, with some criticism for incorporating LGBTQ+ topics and a Black lead character for the first time on this long-running BBC science fiction show. Despite trying to appeal to younger viewers, the new season ended up splitting the fanbase instead.

It was suggested earlier in the year that the popular series “Doctor Who” might be facing cancellation. However, neither Disney nor the BBC have publicly announced any plans for the show beyond its second season, which is due to air next year. In a conversation with SFX (through Games Radar), the showrunner Russell T. Davies had previously clarified that a third season has not yet been commissioned. He explained that such decisions are typical in business and often take time, adding that the decision about whether to proceed with a third season would likely be made following the broadcast of the second season, which is what they have been anticipating all along.

In his next thrilling escapade, The Doctor will appear in a 2024 Christmas special titled “Joy to the World.” This upcoming episode, penned by ex-showrunner Steven Moffat, casts Nicola Coughlan from ‘Bridgerton’ as Joy, who takes on the role of a temporary companion for Ruby Sunday, portrayed by Millie Gibson. In a recent interview with Ireland AM, Moffat shared this exciting news.

“Nicola is amazing, yet she could shatter your heart. I’m supposed to keep quiet about it, and since I believe that’s the case, I guess I won’t say anything more.

In the 2024 holiday special, titled ‘Christmas Special’, the Doctor is expected to meet real-life heroes Sir Edmund Hillary, played by Phil Baxter, and Tenzing Norgay, portrayed by Samuel Sherpa-Moore, who were the first individuals to reach Mount Everest’s peak. Joining this cast are Jonathan Aris, Peter Benedict, Julia Watson, Niamh Marie Smith, and Steph de Whalley. The heartwarming song “Joy to the World” will be introduced on Christmas Day.

You can only watch the first season of “Doctor Who” on Disney+. Production for Season 2 has finished, but they haven’t set a release date yet. Contrary to some rumors, Gibson will indeed be back as Ruby Sunday. Her intriguing narrative is said to continue from where it ended in the previous season.
