As a lifelong fan of Disney and Pixar, I have always admired the magic they weave in their films, the joy they bring to families, and the dreams they spark in children. However, this latest revelation about one of their frequent animators, Bolhem Bouchiba, has left me utterly disillusioned and heartbroken.
Disney and Pixar’s animated movies are cherished and long-lasting family films that are typically the first for many young viewers due to their universal appeal. However, it’s regrettable to learn that not everyone associated with these productions maintains a similarly pure image. Recently, an animator who frequently worked on Disney and Pixar projects has been accused of sexual abuse in France.
As reported by Le Figaro (via Cartoon Brew) and subsequently corroborated, French animator Bolhem Bouchiba stands accused of orchestrating sexual abuse against hundreds of Filipino girls, primarily minors, through live streaming. This disturbing phenomenon appears to be a significant issue in the Philippines. Authorities have been monitoring Bouchiba since 2019, when Europol detected unusual financial transactions to the Philippines, presumed to be for purchasing access to livestreams where he allegedly provided instructions for the sexual abuse of children between the ages of three and fifteen. The suspected number of such livestreams and potential victims is in the hundreds, with estimates reaching up to one thousand.
As a passionate Disney and Pixar fan, I may not have instantly recognized the name Bolhem Bouchiba, but this extraordinary animator has left an indelible mark on the world of animation since the 90s. Working behind the scenes with both studios for over three decades, his exceptional talent made him a vital key animator and story artist for numerous projects.
Apart from his work at Disney, Bouchiba has been involved in other animated films as well. He served as a story artist for the movie “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World,” specifically contributing to the “Forbidden Friendship” segment. Additionally, he was an animator on the Academy Award-winning short film “Dear Basketball,” penned by the late Kobe Bryant. In essence, Bouchiba’s animation skills have been sought after widely.
There’s concern because this animator has had previous legal issues. In 2019, Bouchiba was found guilty of sexually assaulting an eight-year-old girl, the daughter of his then partner. He was given a two-year suspended sentence. It seems that not many people were aware of this conviction, but it doesn’t appear to have affected his professional career in any significant way.
Regardless of whether Bolhem Bouchiba avoids spending the next few decades behind bars, it appears his professional life is effectively ended due to this recent charge. Bolhem Bouchiba is set to stand trial in French courts later this month, with the trial scheduled from October 29-31. If found guilty, the animator may face a maximum sentence of up to 40 years in prison.
