As a cinephile with a penchant for true crime stories, I can hardly contain my excitement for the third season of Ryan Murphy’s Netflix anthology series, Monster. Having immersed myself in the lives and crimes of Jeffrey Dahmer, the Menendez brothers, and now Ed Gein, I find myself drawn to these macabre tales that intertwine with our cultural history.
For its third season, Ryan Murphy’s popular Netflix anthology series “Monster” is shifting focus from Jeffrey Dahmer and the Menendez brothers to the life of infamous serial killer Ed Gein, with Charlie Hunnam starring as the title character. Now, three additional cast members have joined the production, taking on roles based on real-life figures that will add an extra layer of authenticity to this dramatic narrative.
In this production, Laurie Metcalf will take on the character of Augusta, mother of Ed Gein, whereas Tom Hollander and Olivia Williams have been chosen to play Alfred Hitchcock and his wife Alma Reville respectively. Metcalf, renowned for her role as Jackie Harris in Roseanne and The Conners, showcases her remarkable range, particularly in her Oscar-nominated performance in Lady Bird. Fans of Hollander may recognize him from his work with Murphy, portraying Truman Capote in Feud: Capote vs. The Swans, and more recently in The White Lotus. Williams, a star in her own right, has garnered praise for her portrayal of Camilla Parker Bowles in The Crown.
Edward Gein initially gained notoriety in 1957 when Bernice Worden, a local resident of Plainfield, Wisconsin, was found hanging from rafters in a shed on his property, her body mutilated. As more details about his crimes emerged, it became clear that the story was incredibly strange and disturbing. Investigators discovered gruesome items such as bowls made from human skulls, lampshades fashioned from human skin, and other horrific artifacts within his home. Gein’s deeds earned him a place in folklore, and he became well-known to the public due to Robert Bloch’s 1959 novel “Psycho” and the subsequent film directed by Hitchcock, as referenced in the movie “Monsters.” Consequently, it can be inferred that the upcoming third installment of the series will delve into Gein’s life and explain how his actions turned him into a famous pop culture icon.
Ed Gein Has Captivated Us For More Than 60 Years
Under the title “The Original Monster“, filming for Season 3 of the popular Netflix series is scheduled to start on Halloween, hinting at a likely release date in 2025. The captivating tale of The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story garnered an impressive 12.3 million views within its initial four days, but the anticipation for Gein’s story is even greater due to the enduring intrigue surrounding him over the past six decades.
His tale wasn’t just the foundation for the previously mentioned film “Psycho” and Tobe Hooper’s “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre,” but also inspired characters like Buffalo Bill in “Silence of the Lambs,” a relatively unknown 2010 production, “Ed Gein: The Musical,” and countless other movies. This seems to indicate how far removed we’ve become as a society from finding his actions shocking, given that we’re now creating art based on them, isn’t it?
For the residents of Plainfield, it’s no laughing matter to move past the gruesome acts of Ed Gein. After his court case, suspicions of arson led to the demolition of his house to prevent it from turning into a tourist attraction, unlike the Roswell incident in New Mexico where themed restaurants still exist. However, with the upcoming release of Monster Season 3 next year, they should prepare for an increase in curious onlookers who will likely seek out Gein’s unmarked grave, which is not difficult to locate if you know where to search.
