EXCLUSIVE: Lupita Nyong’o Opens Up About The ‘Primary Challenge’ Of Voicing Roz On The Wild Robot: ‘How Do You Show…’

As a dedicated fan, I must say that Lupita Nyong’o’s insights into her role as Roz the robot in “The Wild Robot” have truly piqued my interest. Her ability to portray a character devoid of emotions yet still evoke empathy is nothing short of remarkable. It’s like she’s taken Method Acting to a whole new level, robotic level if you will!

As an over-the-moon fan, I can hardly contain my excitement as I prepare to witness Lupita Nyong’o grace our screens once more, this time bringing Roz the robot to life in the highly anticipated animated sci-fi film, The Wild Robot. In anticipation of the movie’s release, TopMob had the privilege of sitting down for an exclusive interview with the actress, delving into the “challenging aspect” she encountered while voicing this extraordinary character.

Throughout our chat, Nyong’o admitted that her most difficult task in voicing the character was conveying emotions since she is devoid of them. “Typically,” she explained, “I’m compensated for showing and expressing various emotions, both outwardly and inwardly.

In response to the first question she posed when contributing her voice to Roz, she commented, “However, a robot lacks emotions, which raises the challenge of demonstrating evolution without veering into emotional expression.

Later on, the actress disclosed that they chose for Roz to pick up knowledge by imitating others. In simpler terms, Nyong’o said, “We often set up situations to show how she learns from the animals near her.

She explained that we made a conscious effort to steer clear of emotional pitfalls, which might lead you to attribute emotions to Roz that are actually your own projection.

Lupita Nyong’o also emphasized that Roz maintains a straightforward attitude, as even when Brightbill (Kit Connor), the orphaned goose who forms a motherly bond with Roz, is described as having the capacity to fly, she points out that in reality, his heart is quite tiny.

In addition to her previous comments, the actress who played Black Panther also mentioned that one aspect of the film she particularly enjoyed was the chance it provided for viewers to attribute their own feelings to Roz’s character, since Roz doesn’t express emotions through facial expressions, instead allowing audience members to project their own emotions onto her.

During an exclusive chat with TopMob, Lupita Nyong’o shared her delight in bringing to life the development of Roz’s character. She clarified that initially, Roz was a robot set within specific parameters, which resulted in her voice being quite cheerful and optimistic, but mechanically scripted.

Later, as she adjusts to life on the island, her voice subtly transforms to mirror her experiences, and I found it fascinating to follow this transformation alongside Chris,” she noted.

According to Peter Brown’s 2016 novel titled The Wild Robot, Chris Sanders is in charge of both directing and writing the screenplay for this movie adaptation. Alongside Lupita Nyong’o, Pedro Pascal, Kit Connor, Bill Nighy, Mark Hamill, Catherine O’Hara, Stephanie Hsu, Ving Rhames, and Matt Berry are also featured in the film.

The movie will be releasing on theatres across India on October 18.
