As a seasoned film enthusiast who has witnessed the evolution of cinematic storytelling over the past few decades, I find myself intrigued by the latest development in Hollywood – the partnership between Blumhouse and Meta on AI-generated short films.
In collaboration with Meta, Blumhouse is venturing into AI-driven storytelling, producing a collection of short films. These projects will leverage Meta Movie Gen, Meta’s cutting-edge AI technology, which generates both visual and auditory content.
Blumhouse Productions collaborated with filmmakers Casey Affleck, Aneesh Chaganty (known for ‘Searching’), and the Spurlock Sisters to create three short films. These films were produced as part of a Meta pilot project, which aimed to gather feedback from the creative community regarding Meta’s text-to-video tools.
As a passionate movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that Blumhouse has been invited by Meta to collaborate with talented filmmakers, exploring and refining their cutting-edge AI tools. We are excited to delve deeper into Meta Movie Gen, a groundbreaking technology not yet accessible to the public, until at least 2025, as we work closely with creative minds like ours.
Although we won’t integrate Movie Gen models into our public offerings until next year, Meta believes it’s crucial to initiate a transparent and early conversation with the creative community about how to best utilize this tool for creativity and maintain its ethical use,” stated Connor Hayes, VP of GenAI at Meta, in a blog post on Meta AI’s website where the partnership and Blumhouse-produced short films were unveiled.
As a gamer, I’d rephrase that as: “I, personally, believe artists are the heart of our gaming universe. Constantly seeking ways to enhance their storytelling abilities is something I’m always excited about. It was great to have some talented creators try out this groundbreaking tech and share their thoughts on its advantages and drawbacks during its development phase. These tools will be game-changers for directors, and it’s crucial that we involve the creative community in their creation to ensure they’re tailor-made for the task at hand.
Initially, Chaganty’s short film titled “i h8 ai” was the first to be unveiled. Short films by Affleck and the Spurlocks are set to be revealed later today. Meta reports that the filmmakers partnered with the AI researchers from Meta Movie Gen, a generative AI project by the company, sharing insights based on their interactions with the AI tool.
Previously, Meta isn’t unique in presenting AI video creation tools to Hollywood. In fact, as Bloomberg revealed back in March, OpenAI had already met with studio and media industry professionals regarding their product, Sora. More recently, Adobe has announced that it will be releasing its Firefly Video Model – a tool designed for converting images and text into videos – in beta for limited public use.
Runway, an innovative AI research firm, has been unveiling video-generating AI tools, with the latest being Gen-3 Alpha in June. Then, in September, Lionsgate signed a contract to allow Runway to educate a brand-new AI model using their extensive collection of films and TV series.
