As someone who has spent countless hours immersed in the magical world of cinema, I can wholeheartedly vouch for the unparalleled experience that IMAX offers. The harmony and balance within their theater design truly transport you into the heart of the story, making you not just an observer but a participant.
There’s nothing quite as satisfying as becoming fully engrossed in a film. The experience of sitting in a dimly lit theater surrounded by others, embarking on the same emotional odyssey, is unparalleled. For those precious two hours, the happenings of reality fade away. All that truly matters is making a connection and experiencing something profound. My aim is always to be fully immersed, and it seems IMAX shares this passion for complete cinematic involvement.
In the context of our continued collaboration with AMC Theatres, we dispatched a camera team to IMAX’s headquarters for discussions centered around Venom: The Last Dance and its production. Throughout our interactions with professionals from their premium format, we delved into the essence of immersion, how it is achieved, and it appears that, for them, the process begins with theater architecture design.
We spoke to Alex Crabbe, who is the Manager Of Theatre Design over at IMAX, and he told us it’s natural harmony and balance that help create it. Here’s a portion of his quote…
In every theatre we work with, we use a carefully crafted geometric design to achieve a harmonious and balanced environment for all its elements, ensuring an IMAX Theatre experience goes beyond merely viewing a film. Instead, when you enter an IMAX Theatre, our designers strive to envelop you such that watching a movie feels like being part of the film itself.
For IMAX, it’s about creating an atmosphere within the theater that mirrors what the filmmaker intends for viewers to experience, aiming for a high level of realism and intensity. Contrary to common belief, this doesn’t necessarily mean turning up the volume. Instead, according to Peter Ogborn, IMAX’s Director of Production DMR and Sound Mastering, it’s more about strategically emphasizing the bass during moments where the filmmaker wants to convey intense emotion or action.
It’s actually incorrect to assume that IMAX movies are always louder. Instead, IMAX takes pride in presenting films exactly as the filmmaker intended, with an emphasis on bass that immerses viewers. This means when something explodes, you can truly feel and participate in the action due to the powerful bass.
Jeff Dunant, IMAX’s Senior Manager of Digital Mastering, shared similar thoughts. He explained that when it comes to movies with heavy visual effects (VFX), their aim is to exhibit these effects in high definition on large screens for optimal clarity. However, this goal is not just about showcasing the work or creating a loud or chaotic experience. Instead, they strive to make the on-screen happenings appear as realistically as possible, aiming to immerse the audience in the movie’s world.
As a gamer, I can’t wait to experience the jaw-dropping visuals of VFX-heavy movies on the largest, clearest screen possible. The extra detail and realism will make me feel like I’m right in the heart of the action!
Audience members will get a firsthand glimpse of the action when Venom: The Last Dance premieres on IMAX screens at AMC Theatres on October 25th. The movie boasts thrilling action scenes that you’ll truly experience, along with more tender moments where the storytelling takes a softer approach to create a deeper emotional connection. Essentially, it covers a wide range of tones, and there’s no better place to enjoy it than on an IMAX screen at AMC Theatres.
