James Turrell's Ethereal 'Glasswork' Illuminates Almine Rech Paris

As a connoisseur of art, particularly the enigmatic and ethereal works of James Turrell, I find myself absolutely captivated by the new exhibition at Almine Rech, entitled “Path Taken”. This exhibition is not just a visual feast for the eyes, but a profound exploration of the very essence of light and space.

In anticipation of Art Basel Paris, Almine Rech gallery is presenting a fresh solo exhibition featuring iconic Light and Space artist James Turrell’s works. Titled “Path Taken“, this exhibit will feature a brand new light piece from Turrell’s Glassworks collection, which originated in 2004, but whose exploration can be traced back to the 1960s.

The main artwork subtly alters the way viewers perceive space by employing a transparent rectangular structure that subtly shifts color over an hour using LED lighting. In a 2004 interview, artist James Turrell stated, “When people talk about light, they often use terms like ‘near-death experiences,’ ‘religious transformations,’ and ‘spiritual journeys.’ My work isn’t about conveying religious messages; it’s about experiencing the physical nature of light itself, feeling its presence. Gold has no inherent worth; we assign value to it. We tend to treat light carelessly, as if it were insubstantial. But light is not just an intangible force; photons are particles, matter. They demonstrate wave properties, much like water.

Additionally, Carine Asscher’s 1995 film, titled “Passageways“, is being showcased. This film delves into the behind-the-scenes aspects of James Turrell’s career, and also features a less frequently displayed bronze sculpture and a substantial drawing from the artist based in Flagstaff, Arizona. The exhibition, called “Path Taken“, will be available for viewing in Paris until December 21, 2024.
