Kamala Harris Shares Her Feelings About Maya Rudolph Impersonating Her On Saturday Night Live

As a seasoned gamer who has seen his fair share of political satire in games like “Total War: Rome II” and “Civilization VI”, I must say that Saturday Night Live‘s return to the political stage is nothing short of exhilarating. The combination of Maya Rudolph’s spot-on portrayal of Kamala Harris and James Austin Johnson’s eerily accurate Trump impression has made for some truly side-splitting comedy.

Saturday Night Live (SNL) is gearing up for its historic 50th season with some star-studded hosts and musicians, but these celebrities might not be the main draw for many viewers lately. With a presidential election around the corner, Maya Rudolph has reprised her role on SNL as Kamala Harris, joining current cast member James Austin Johnson and his uncanny portrayal of Donald Trump. Political skits have been a hit since SNL returned to the 2024 TV lineup, but what do the candidates themselves think? Harris herself has addressed this question.

In an interview with Charlamagne tha God on The Breakfast Club, Kamala Harris addressed the Saturday Night Live skits that have mimicked her response style. When asked about the accuracy of Maya Rudolph’s portrayal and the overall representation of her by SNL, Vice President Harris replied:

Maya Rudolph is simply fantastic, and I can’t help but express my deep respect for her comedic skills. It’s crucial to laugh at oneself and others in a way that reinforces camaraderie through humor, rather than undermining people’s dignity.

Kamala Harris appears unfazed by the political satire of Saturday Night Live, provided it maintains a friendly tone. There’s been no shortage of such humor – from both parties – as SNL has dared to bring in non-regular performers to embody some of this election period’s key figures.

On the October 12 episode, for example, Kenan Thompson once again played his Steve Harvey character in a political version of Family Feud, where James Austin Johnson, Maya Rudolph, and Bowen Yang appeared as presidential candidates, along with Mikey Day portraying Donald Trump Jr., Dana Carvey reprising Joe Biden (a role he had discussed with Lorne Michaels even before Biden ended his campaign), Jim Gaffigan playing Tim Walz, and Andy Samberg taking on the role of Doug Emhoff.

Regarding Doug Emhoff, it was mentioned that during the prelude to Saturday Night Live’s Season 50 debut, he was asked about Maya Rudolph’s portrayal of his wife previously. He expressed a desire for SNL to create an interesting character for him. Although Andy Samberg might not be the Hugh Jackman or Ryan Reynolds that Emhoff had hoped for, let’s hope he entertained Rudolph just as much as Kamala Harris seems to enjoy her portrayal.

There’s still a few weeks left until Election Day, so I don’t think political satire will be ending any time soon. With Saturday Night Live having a reputation for excellent presidential impersonations, we’ll have to wait and see if and how real-life events might prompt fictional showdowns between the characters portraying Kamala Harris and Donald Trump after November 5th.

On Saturday evenings at 11:30 p.m. Eastern Time, you’ll find all the action from SNL on NBC, or if you prefer to stream it, you can do so with a Peacock subscription.
