As a seasoned gamer and longtime fan of Dragon Ball Z, I must admit that when I heard about the new series, Dragon Ball Daima, I was initially hesitant. After all, we all grew up with Goku’s epic battles and the thrill of watching him become the most powerful fighter in the universe. But as I sat down to watch the first episode, I realized that it doesn’t matter how long it’s been since we last watched Dragon Ball; this series is a fresh take on an old classic that’s worth checking out.
Fans of Dragon Ball Z might have come across news about a new series, but they may feel hesitant to watch due to fond memories of Goku conquering the universe. As we grow older, maintaining the pace of shows like that can be challenging. For me, this was true as well. However, I’m here to let you know it’s perfectly okay to dive into Dragon Ball Daima, even if you’ve taken a break from the series for some time.
In this article, we’re discussing the latest show created by the late Dragon Ball creator, Akira Toriyama, which has sparked curiosity among many viewers. Even though I can’t definitively say whether you’ll enjoy it since the series is still new, I can certainly highlight some reasons why fans who haven’t followed the franchise closely in recent years might find this episode appealing. Let’s explore together!
Dragon Ball Daima Doesn’t Require You To Have Seen Dragon Ball Super
The “Dragon Ball Daima” show comes following the latest instalment, “Dragon Ball Super”, but don’t worry if you haven’t watched it; this new series is connected more closely to the original “Dragon Ball Z” storyline and begins shortly after the end of the Majin Buu arc.
In this scenario, it seems that the latest revelations about the mythology in Dragon Ball Super, including discussions on gods, multiverse, and angels, are not applicable here. Instead, the atmosphere appears to be reminiscent of Dragon Ball Z, featuring many familiar characters and elements that a less hardcore fan would recognize.
If you recall the Dragon Balls and their functions, you’re well-prepared. In the upcoming series, Dragon Ball Daima, some fresh aspects of the larger storyline will be unveiled. However, these are not so intricate that they make it difficult to comprehend. Compared to Dragon Ball Z, which was popular for its captivating characters, DBZ wasn’t known for being a complex anime. But Dragon Ball Super added a layer of complexity, though it won’t play a role in this particular storyline.
The Series Premiere Features A Recap Of The Maijin Buu Saga
Regardless of how long it’s been since you last watched Dragon Ball Z, specifically Goku defeating Majin Buu with a spirit bomb back in the early 2000s, diving into Dragon Ball Daima is still an achievable task. This is largely due to the initial episode introducing key characters like Supreme Kai’s brother Degusu and the new Demon King, King Gomah. Throughout the first episode, these characters watch the events of the Majin Buu saga from Dragon Ball Z on a TV, allowing new viewers to catch up on the storyline.
Without diving into specific plot details for those who prefer to discover the story on their own, let me tell you that some major revelations about the Demon Realm are unveiled right from the start of the series. If your curiosity about the Demon Realm in Dragon Ball is piqued, this show delves deep into that aspect. Unlike many ’90s anime and similar titles, it appears that this series will tackle these themes more thoroughly.
I will add the disclaimer that if you’re an English-speaking reader who grew up watching the dubbed version of the Dragon Ball shows, you will have to wait a while to see that. Fathom Events is planning to premiere the first three episodes of the English dub in theaters November 10th through the 12th, and I assume they’ll arrive on Crunchyroll about a week or so after that. If you don’t mind subtitles though, jump in now. I had no problem watching the first episode, even though I was raised watching the dub.
So Far, The Series Has A Similar Premise To Dragon Ball GT
Although there’s still ample opportunity for the series to establish its unique identity, there are already some resemblances between this new series and the follow-up to Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball GT. It’s not unusual that this franchise has featured a villain who used the Dragon Balls to transform Goku into a child on two occasions now. The only distinction is that in this latest instance, the individual who performed the wish chose to make all the Z Fighters children as well.
The actor paid homage to the voice of the series.
I’m curious about the role and continuity of characters named Daima and GT in the Dragon Ball series. It’s intriguing to consider if Daima was designed as a substitute for GT, given that GT was developed without Akira Toriyama’s direct involvement. However, the plot thickens when GT appears on a canonical timeline within the Dragon Ball universe, leading me to wonder if two separate villains might have independently devised similar plans?
In due time and with additional episodes, we might find some answers to these questions. As more episodes roll out, I suspect the series will provide clearer insights, but for now, here’s my take: The very first episode of “Daima” hinted at multiverse travel, a concept that was also present in “Dragon Ball Super”. Given that “Daima” seems to be increasingly referencing a series that follows it chronologically, there’s a possibility this new series is intended as a rewrite or replacement for the “GT” series. All we can do now is wait and observe, continuing to enjoy this franchise which was a beloved part of our “Toonami” viewing experience in the past.
