As a seasoned movie critic with decades of film viewing under my belt, I can confidently say that Bruce Campbell‘s return to the iconic role of Ash Williams is music to the ears of horror enthusiasts everywhere. The man’s ability to embody such an unforgettable character has spanned generations and multiple iterations of “The Evil Dead.” It’s akin to hearing the familiar strains of a classic rock tune that instantly transports you back to your youth, except instead of guitars, we have chainsaws.
It seems that horror movie icon Bruce Campbell (known for films like “Bubba Ho-Tep” and “Burn Notice”) may be destined to reprise his role as Ash Williams in future versions of “The Evil Dead”. During a chat with MovieWeb about his upcoming role in the terrifying series “Hysteria!”, Campbell openly discussed the possibility of playing Ash once more if original director Sam Raimi (famous for the “Spider-Man” trilogy and “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”) were to work on the project.
Campbell pondered, “We can no longer conceal the upcoming movies since the last one, 2023’s Evil Dead Rise, has been our most successful Evil Dead production yet. It would be foolish to discontinue at this point, so we’ve got at least two more films in development and are even considering an animated series.
The recent development that has the internet abuzz is the revelation that Campbell is open to providing his voice for the project. He stated enthusiastically that he would be more than willing to contribute in this way.
Although my years may suggest a more mature tone, my voice remains youthful, preferring to deliver dialogues instead of performing physically strenuous actions like falling down stairs. It certainly makes for a less taxing job.
The Evil Dead Legend Goes On
Without a doubt, we can’t seem to get enough of discussing “The Evil Dead”. Over four decades ago, in October 1981, the initial movie graced cinema screens, launching Campbell into stardom and solidifying Sam Raimi as an extraordinary creative talent. In this original film, Ash Williams, portrayed by Campbell, along with his companions, struggle for survival as the dead are resurrected. Throughout their ordeal, Ash finds himself engaged in a night-long battle, losing some comrades in the process.
The movie gave rise to several follow-ups, including “Evil Dead II” from 1987, and “Army of Darkness” in 1992, completing the original planned trilogy. A remake titled “Evil Dead” from 2013, directed by Fede Alvarez (known for “Alien: Romulus”), stirred a lot of conversation due to its post-credits scenes. In these scenes, an older Ash is shown in a shadowy silhouette, and after a brief pause, we hear him say his famous line, “Groovy.
In 2015, the television series “Ash vs. The Evil Dead” expanded the franchise with 30 episodes, and the 2023 release “Evil Dead Rise” set the stage for future projects. Interestingly, Bruce Campbell made a brief appearance without credit, lending his voice to an enigmatic, unnamed character who issued a chilling warning about the perils of the demon revival ritual from the infamous, problematic book called “Naturom Demonto”.
The Horror of Hysteria!
As intrigue continues to grow, Campbell, no doubt, will continue to be outspoken. In the meantime, there’s 1980s-set Hysteria!, in which the actor plays a reliable cop, who may just be the sanest guy in town. Here’s the thing: the town has gone bonkers. The show’s logline reads: “When a beloved varsity quarterback disappears during the “Satanic Panic” of the late 1980s, a struggling high school heavy metal band of outcasts realize they can capitalize on the town’s sudden interest in the occult by building a reputation as a Satanic metal band, until a bizarre series of murders, kidnappings, and reported supernatural activity triggers a leather-studded witch hunt that leads directly back to them.” Hysteria! hits Peacock October 18.
