As a long-time fan of Rick and Morty, I couldn’t be more thrilled about the news that this beloved show will continue to entertain us for another four seasons! From its hilarious humor and thought-provoking plots to its brilliant animation and unforgettable characters, it has been a joy to watch the adventures of Rick and Morty unfold.
Rick and Morty will live on (and on).
The popular adult comedy series “Rick and Morty,” produced by Adult Swim, has been given approval for two more seasons, taking it up to its 12th season and keeping it on air until 2029. This exciting news was shared during a panel at New York Comic Con, where co-creator Dan Harmon, showrunner Scott Marder, and several key voice cast members were present. “We don’t want a world without Rick and Morty,” expressed Harmon, adding that there will always be new adventures to explore since the possibilities are endless.
This animated series, first introduced back in 2013, was initially approved for up to season 10. However, due to the lengthy production process of animation, season eight is still yet to be broadcast. It’s scheduled to start in 2025 and one of its episodes will showcase a preview animatic, which was also unveiled at the NYCC panel.
Since its debut in Season One, “Rick and Morty” has redefined adult animation and continues to push boundaries. As stated by Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, creators Dan, Scott, and their incredibly skilled team consistently surpass expectations. The anticipation for more thrilling escapades in the future is shared not only by him but also by millions of fans worldwide.
As a dedicated fan, I’ve just learned that our favorite show, the number one comedy on Adult Swim, is set for a comeback following some significant changes behind the scenes. Co-creator Justin Roiland, who voices both Rick and Morty, was let go from the series after an early 2023 report by NBC News alleged he faced felony domestic violence charges stemming from a 2020 incident. However, due to insufficient evidence, these charges were later dropped. Regrettably, Adult Swim had already decided to part ways, resulting in another actor taking over his voice roles.
In September of the same year, NBC News released a second report detailing nine individual claims against him, spanning from sexual harassment to sexual assault. Roiland, who refuted these accusations, is said to have utilized his connection with “Rick and Morty” and its popular status on social media and dating platforms to attract the women. At this juncture, Harmon, who had remained silent about the situation involving his co-creator, spoke out to The Hollywood Reporter.
In a 2023 cover story, he admitted that he’s had little to say about Justin because he secluded himself effectively and due to the fact that I’m not typically someone asked for opinions. However, he wished he could shift the focus onto his own life, given his history of questionable actions in the public eye. He expressed a desire for safety and comfort in discussing himself, but doing so here would be misleading and potentially harmful to others. Unfortunately, it was other people’s well-being that suffered while he focused on the quality of a cartoon. Trust has been shattered between many individuals and the show intended to entertain them. He is disappointed, ashamed, and heartbroken that his efforts, joy, and passion could be used to hurt strangers.
During this period, production progressed smoothly. The roles of the narcissistic, alcoholic genius Rick and his clumsy grandson Morty were assigned to newcomers Ian Cardoni and Harry Belden for season seven. It’s been said that Roiland’s involvement in the series has primarily been limited to voice work for quite some time now. Marder, on the other hand, was brought on board to take over as a true showrunner after season three, and from all indications, has been instrumental in providing the necessary structure and organization to keep the show going.
As a gamer, I couldn’t be more thrilled to have been handed the torch for what feels like a lifetime during Rick and Morty’s fourth season, leading us all the way to Season 10. Now, to surpass that milestone is an honor I can hardly contain my excitement about, and I can’t wait to share this journey with our fans. Rick and Morty, here’s to a century of adventures and more to come!
