Shrinking: After Sean Switched Therapists From Jimmy To Paul, I Asked Luke Tennie About The Differences Between Working With Harrison Ford And Jason Segel

Jessica Williams shared an enchanting tale with us about the reasons for her water bottle accumulating additional accessories as it became smaller.

As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve got to say that “Shrinking” on Apple TV+ is one of my favorite shows because Jason Segel’s character, Jimmy, the rule-bending therapist, and Harrison Ford’s character, Paul, the grumpy rule-follower, make for an engaging contrast. Watching these two debate their profession and lives keeps me hooked, and in Season 2, I found myself right in the thick of it as Luke Tennie’s character, Sean, transitioned from being Jimmy’s patient to Paul’s.

In the premier of “Shrinking’s” second season, I found myself drawn into Jimmy’s character as he crossed a line with his therapy methods, particularly with Sean. It seemed like he was using patients, including Sean, as a means to mend his own emotional wounds. Consequently, Paul had no choice but to forbid Jimmy from treating Sean further. This shift paved the way for Harrison Ford’s character to step in and work with Tennie instead, adding an exciting twist to the series.

During my conversation with the cast of “Shrinking”, I posed a question to Luke Tennie concerning the shift in his character’s therapists and the variations in collaborating with the actors, Jason Segel and Harrison Ford, who portray them. In reply, the actor who plays Sean shared with me:

Working with Jason and Harrison is akin to collaborating with two skilled artisans, each boasting unique techniques in their shared craft.

It’s quite evident to observe the contrast between the career paths of Jason Segel, famously known for his comedic roles such as “How I Met Your Mother,” “Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” and “The Muppets,” and Harrison Ford, renowned for action-packed blockbusters like “Indiana Jones” and “Star Wars.” While Segel has built a career on humor, Ford is an icon due to his work in dramas and sci-fi films.

Combining them creates a delightful contrast on screen that’s both amusing and intriguing, as their personalities are remarkably distinct. It also results in an enjoyable filming process due to these differences.

The Sean actor broke down why with me too, saying the following about the 1923 actor:

Harrison’s work is reminiscent to collaborating with a skilled carpenter. Just like him, he has the overall plan (the blueprints), and we progress step by step. The joy comes in when we construct the framework together, then we proceed to add the finishing touches, which is the interior decoration.

Indeed, just as Harrison Ford once crafted wooden structures as a carpenter, the metaphor rings true. This also implies that he and Tennie collaborated, much like two skilled artisans, to lay the groundwork for a scene – a foundation upon which they could subsequently enjoy themselves immensely.

Regarding Jason Segel, the stuntman described their bond as feeling more like siblings, and the manner in which Segel, from Freaks and Geeks, approaches his work tends to be more introspective, as he put it.

With Jason, there’s an uncanny ability that makes everyone seem extraordinary, yet the method behind his magic is exclusive, almost like a secret hidden beyond a ‘Staff Only’ door. Although I can tell he’s putting in a lot of mental effort to make it appear effortless, the specifics remain elusive. It’s as if we’re being guided by a friendly, nurturing older brother.

Just like Jimmy and Paul, Segel and Ford display distinct acting styles. Yet, their unique approaches complement each other remarkably well. Luke Tennie shared with me his admiration for collaborating with these two actors, expressing how “inspired” he felt by the unexpected twist in his character’s narrative.

It’ll be intriguing to watch how Paul assists Sean and how Jimmy influences their partnership. Given that Shrinking is known for its humor and chaos, I expect it will be quite amusing and unpredictable. Yet, I have no doubt that Luke Tennie’s character will gain insightful lessons from both men during this season, much like the actor has learned from Segel and Ford.
