Audrey Nuna dons her armor, yet she’s surprisingly open. The 25-year-old musician from New Jersey, who utilizes fashion as a protective shield, has created a bionic hero identity for herself leading up to her second studio album, titled TRENCH. This album explores her inherent duality in greater depth. Divided into two parts called “SOFT SKIN” and “HARD FEELINGS“, the 16-track collection marks the end of a successful year for Nuna and finds her in her characteristic transcendental state – more introspective and vulnerable than ever before.
In an interview from July, she shared additional insights about this idea, emphasizing her intention to depict a longing and craving to retain tender emotions during adolescence, even when confronted with harsh experiences that might otherwise toughen an individual.
In a gentle yet syrupy melody, “SOFT SKIN” is characterized. This softness is evident in the pre-release singles such as “Jokes On Me,” “Suckin Up,” and “Mine.” However, a more profound and existential energy emerges on tracks like “HARD FEELINGS,” as demonstrated in the 2023 track “Locket” and the album’s collaborative cut with Teezo Touchdown, titled “Starving.
Other notable tracks include “SOFT SKIN”‘s related version, “Baby OG,” which comes with a music video too, and the emotionally raw songs “What About Me” and “2High” from the album “HARD FEELINGS.
At one point, maturing seems romantic and pure, and a liquid breakfast was exactly that. This project is deeply grounded in darker themes, not just musically but conceptually as well. She made these remarks during an interview when the project was first introduced, and TRENCH has been released about three years after a liquid breakfast’s 2021 debut.
