Paul King is creating a standalone movie featuring a Disney character who is often overlooked – Prince Charming. Following the success of the Paddington series and the unexpected success of the musical Wonka, King will collaborate with Disney on his next project. He has garnered widespread affection and excitement as one of the most talented filmmakers in the industry today. Known for taking concepts that may not seem promising at first glance and turning them into box office hits, he gained recognition by directing all 20 episodes of the quirky BBC comedy series The Mighty Boosh and subsequently helmed Paddington, Paddington 2, and Wonka.
According to Deadline, it has been announced that Paul King will direct a movie centered around the character of Prince Charming, marking the first time this Disney prince will take center stage in his own film. King is teaming up with British comedian and co-writer of “Paddington 2”, Simon Farnaby, as well as Jon Croker who contributed to “Paddington 2” for scriptwriting. Despite being commonly associated with various Disney princes, only the one from “Cinderella” bears the title of Prince Charming. Deadline reports that King’s interpretation of Prince Charming will not necessarily be connected to the “Cinderella” tale.
Over the years, the character of Prince Charming has become well-known, largely due to Disney productions. In the 1950 animated Disney film “Cinderella”, William Edward Phillips lent his voice to the singing part of Prince Charming, while Mike Douglas provided the actual voiceover. Paolo Montalban played Prince Christopher in the 1997 Disney television film “Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella”, and he later appeared as King Charming in “Descendants: The Rise of Red”. In the live-action remake of “Cinderella” from 2015, Richard Madden took on the role of Prince Charming, known as Kit. However, in the ABC series “Once Upon a Time”, the character is named Snow White’s Prince and goes by the title of Charming; Prince Charming from “Cinderella” only appears in two episodes under the name Prince Thomas, portrayed by Tim Phillips.
What Disney Live-Action Movies Are Coming Soon?
Prince Charming is another of many Disney live-action reimaginings of their classic stories in development. However, Prince Charming seems to have more in common with Maleficent, Cruella, and Christopher Robin, movies that take specific characters outside the stories they originally played a role in. This year, Disney are expanding one of their most successful remakes with Mufasa: The Lion King, which will open on December 20, 2024. After that, Snow White and Lilo & Stitch remakes are slated for release in 2025, with Moana set for 2026. There are many others that have been announced, but so far do not have set release dates and could yet fall by the wayside. These include Hercules, The Aristocats, and Bambi. That also doesn’t account for previously announced spin-offs that Disney have reportedly scrapped, like Prince Anders, which was a spin-off of Aladdin, or Little Town, which would have seen Luke Evans and Josh Gad reprise their roles as Gaston and LeFou from Beauty and the Beast.
Initially, Prince Charming might not seem like an original choice due to his familiarity, yet this makes him perfect for Paul King. At first glance, Paddington appeared to be another typical talking animal children’s movie, similar to Garfield or The Smurfs. However, it turned out to be a charming family film that received positive feedback and sparked a popular film series. Similarly, a prequel about Willy Wonka seemed like a bad idea on paper, but King and his team transformed it into another enjoyable family production with catchy tunes. Moreover, the fact that Prince Charming is often confused with other princes from Cinderella, Snow White, and Sleeping Beauty provides an opportunity for comedic exploration – examining his significance when people only remember his role in a story, regardless of which tale it belongs to.
