As a seasoned movie enthusiast with a penchant for unconventional storytelling and a soft spot for nostalgic throwbacks, I find Robert Pattinson‘s choice of inspiration for his dual roles in “Mickey 17” nothing short of intriguing. The fact that he turned to the iconic cat-and-dog duo from Ren & Stimpy speaks volumes about his commitment to character development and his ability to think outside the box.

The actor, known for roles in “The Lighthouse” and “The Boy and the Heron,” and previously famous for playing sparkly vampires, has unveiled an unexpected influence behind his diverse voices in the upcoming sci-fi black comedy “Mickey 17“. In a conversation with Empire, Pattinson disclosed that a popular ’90s Nickelodeon series served as inspiration for his performance(s) in this movie. Footage from “Mickey 17” has already hinted at the unusual vocal talents we can expect when the film hits cinemas in January, and now, we know that nostalgic Nickelodeon show is what sparked Pattinson’s creative choices.

Intriguingly enough, I must share with you that Robert Pattinson will embody not one, but two characters in the upcoming film “Mickey 17”. As these roles are identical in every aspect, he required a unique approach to distinguish them. Remarkably, his initial thought was to seek assistance from the dynamic duo, Steve-O and Johnny Knoxville of the infamous “Jackass” fame. However, this idea was swiftly dismissed by the visionary director, Bong Joon-ho.

Originally, I planned to mimic the voices of Steve-O and Johnny Knoxville, particularly Steve-O’s, as I find his voice quite appealing. During our first attempt, we tried it out. But Bong commented that my imitation sounded like scratching on a chalkboard. I asked if that was a positive comment, to which he replied, ‘No.’

In Desperation, Robert Pattinson Turned to a Certain Cat & Dog Duo

It’s fortunate that Pattinson had yet another well-known character pair stored in his creative mind, which he utilized to voice Mickey 17 and Mickey 18. Indeed, these characters are the chihuahua dog and Manx cat duo from the beloved animated series, “Ren & Stimpy.

Each reprinted Mickey feels to Pattinson like a slight dilution of the original character. He describes it as if Mickey is a dog with an overwhelming sense of low self-worth. Yet, he continues to show up, following his duty. However, Pattinson hints at a surprising revelation that this persistence stems from both deep, misguided guilt and a strong will to survive. It’s as if Mickey is constantly adjusting his expectations downwards.

Directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Bong Joon Ho, “Mickey 17” will hit theaters on January 31, 2025, starring Robert Pattinson, who plays multiple roles in this highly anticipated movie. Joining him are Naomi Ackie (“Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker”), Steven Yeun (“Nope”), along with Academy Award nominees Toni Collette (“Hereditary”) and Mark Ruffalo (“Poor Things”). Originally slated for a March 2024 release, the film has been postponed indefinitely due to delays caused by the SAG-AFTRA strike. The story is adapted from Edward Ashton’s novel “Mickey7.” You can find the official synopsis below.
