Denis Villeneuve Confirms He’s Writing Dune 3, Teases When It’ll Be Set

As a die-hard fan of Denis Villeneuve‘s mesmerizing Dune saga, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming installment, Dune: Messiah. Having lived through the suspenseful cliffhanger that was Dune: Part Two, I eagerly await the continuation of Paul Atreides’ (Timothée Chalamet) journey and the fate of Zendaya’s enigmatic Chani.

The films directed by Denis Villeneuve for Dune are widely considered among the greatest science fiction movies ever made. With their phenomenal success, fans have been anxiously awaiting updates on the third part, titled Messiah. Previously, it appeared that the renowned director might step away from this project, but he has confirmed that he’s currently in the scriptwriting phase. Moreover, he also revealed when the upcoming blockbuster will be set.

Though Villeneuve has been somewhat secretive regarding Dune 3, he recently gave a highly anticipated glimpse into his plans. During an interview with Deadline about the franchise, he revealed he was in the “writing phase”, and discussed mirroring the novel Messiah for its movie adaptation. In Villeneuve’s own words:

Similar to how Herbert changed the narrative for Dune: Messiah, I believe it would be intriguing to explore something entirely fresh. The plot unfolds approximately 12 years after we last saw the characters at the conclusion of Part Two. This time, their adventures and tales have undergone a transformation, which is why I often emphasize that while it’s the same world, it’s essentially a new production with novel circumstances.

To put it simply, I can’t help but express my excitement for joining in. The conclusion of Dune: Part Two left a sense of suspense that was quite reminiscent of a cliffhanger. Paul Atreides, portrayed by Timothée Chalamet, made a decision that seemed to lean towards the “dark side”, declaring himself as the genuine Muad’Dib and initiating a foretold holy war. Given this turn of events, fans are eagerly anticipating what comes next and how Zendaya’s character, Chani, responds to these developments.

Instead of continuing immediately after the events of “Dune: Part Two,” the third film will instead leap forward in time by more than a decade. This time jump will allow us to witness the impact Paul’s actions have had on the world, and it’s likely that we’ll see a significantly changed version of the man we’ve been following throughout the first two movies.

Following a brief appearance by Anya Taylor-Joy as character Alia (Paul’s sister) in “Dune 2”, fans are eagerly anticipating seeing her portrayal more fully. Director Denis Villeneuve has been attracting A-list Hollywood talent for his franchise, with actors like Chalamet, Zendaya, Florence Pugh, and Austin Butler among them. The cast of “Dune: Part Two” was impressive, leaving fans wondering who else might be joining the star-studded lineup in “Messiah”.

It’s important to note that as of now, there’s no confirmed release date for “Dune: Messiah”. We might need to be patient for a few more years before we can watch it on the big screen. On a positive note, the Dune universe is growing with the upcoming Max series titled “Dune: Prophecy”. This series, set 10,000 years prior to the first film’s events, will focus on the formation and rise of power of the Bene Gesserit. Fans speculate that the title suggests a link to the prophecy surrounding Paul Atreides in the films. However, we’ll have to wait and see how it all unfolds.

The film titled “Dune: Prophecy” is set to debut on November 17th, exclusively on Max. In the meantime, take a look at the TV premiere schedule to help you decide your next binge-watching session.
