As a die-hard fan of both Marvel and DC, I wholeheartedly support Sebastian Stan‘s ambition to step into the shoes of a Batman villain, specifically the Riddler. His extensive experience within the superhero genre, coupled with his knack for tackling complex characters, makes him an ideal candidate for such a role.
Known for his affinity with superhero stories, Sebastian Stan is expressing his desire to portray a famous Batman antagonist within the DC Universe. Currently cast in Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts* as Bucky Barnes, Stan continues to carve out a niche for himself in the MCU while taking on challenging, sometimes contentious roles. His passion for comic book adaptations remains strong, and he’s eager to tackle a villainous character that recently appeared in Matt Reeves’ The Batman — specifically, the Riddler.
In an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz, Stan was inquired about the possibility of him portraying a non-MCU superhero. This is a question that many film actors face nowadays, regardless if they are already involved in a comic book movie franchise. However, Stan’s response might catch some fans off guard and may actually be viable. At first, he hesitates to give a definitive answer, but eventually, he mentions that if he were to switch to the DC universe, The Riddler would be his preferred character to play.
Initially, I may have given the impression that I would never consider another character. However, I must admit there are numerous characters, and as you recall, I’ve always had a soft spot for The Riddler. But, considering it’s been done before, perhaps we could explore others instead.
Indeed, Paul Dano played the Riddler, the latest Batman antagonist in Matt Reeves’ crime drama on the big screen. But just because he’s done so, doesn’t mean Stanley won’t get a chance to portray this iconic character sometime soon. If Bane and Deathstroke have their own movies in James Gunn’s DC Universe, then it’s not impossible for another recent Batman villain to appear in the rebooted cinematic universe. Furthermore, if the contentious Donald Trump biopic titled “The Apprentice” has shown us anything, it’s that Stanley is fully capable of playing a villain.
Sebastian Stan Has Been Snubbed for Several Major Roles
In the same podcast, Sebastian Stan disclosed that he had been vying for significant roles in big franchises throughout the years. Ranging from Star Trek to the controversial Green Lantern movie, the Marvel star admitted that he came close to outshining other top-tier actors who eventually landed the parts played by Chris Pine and Ryan Reynolds. At that time, his resume wasn’t as impressive as it is now, and he hadn’t yet donned the role of Winter Soldier. Despite these circumstances, his determination didn’t waver, and he continued to chase after those roles with fervor.
“I wanted two roles badly, but the one for Captain Kirk in J.J. Abrams’ version was almost mine. I recall having a screen test at Paramount with Abrams and even did a separate photo shoot trying to imitate William Shatner, hoping it would show how much I resembled him. Still, I didn’t get the part.
I also auditioned for the role of Green Lantern. When I arrived, it was myself, Justin Timberlake, Jared Leto, Ryan Reynolds, and possibly another individual. As I looked at these men, I thought, “Oh no! This can’t be happening!” It seemed impossible.
