MIPCOM: Brazil’s Globo, Germany’s Beta Join Forces for Drama Series

As a seasoned gamer with a knack for international series, I must say this partnership between Beta Film and Grupo Globo has piqued my interest! The upcoming crime drama, “Discipline,” seems like a thrilling blend of Brazilian storytelling and European intrigue. With Konrad Dantas, the creator behind “Sintonia,” at the helm, I’m eagerly anticipating the complex characters and gripping narrative that await us.

Under an extended collaboration, international production company Beta Film from Germany and the vast Brazilian media conglomerate Grupo Globo have agreed to jointly produce multiple drama series, aimed at global distribution.

The new agreement, unveiled at MIPCOM on Monday, begins with “Discipline” (working title), an eight-hour crime series penned by Konrad Dantas, famously known as KondZilla and a co-creator of the Brazilian Netflix show “Sintonia”. The story revolves around Maicon, a young Brazilian businessman, who finds himself in a complex predicament as he straddles between his family, predominantly women, and a European crime boss’ daughter, each facing their respective power struggles. As fate would have it, they join forces in an intense partnership to transport cocaine from South America to Europe.

Felipe Braga, who co-created Dantas’ series Sintonia, will collaborate with Dantas on a new project titled Discipline. This collaboration is between Braga’s LB Entertainment and Dantas’ KondZilla. The production will be overseen by Globo, Beta Film, and the recently established Janeiro Studios, led by former Beta CCO Koby Gal Raday. The writers room for this project includes Duda de Almeida (from Sintonia), Davi Kolb (Criminal Code) and Tamiris Hilário (also from Criminal Code). Exclusively in Brazil, Globo will air the show on its streaming platform Globoplay. Beta Film will handle international sales for the series.

In Manuel Belmar’s words, “Co-productions provide a unique approach for us at Globo to distribute our content globally.” He further explained that this new partnership with Beta Film is about merging our strengths. “It’s an agreement where we all benefit, but most importantly, it’s the audience who stands to gain the most.

Koby Gal Raday of Janeiro Studios emphasizes that it’s long overdue for Brazilian talent and narratives to captivate international viewers. This thrilling tale, skillfully blending Brazilian and European protagonists, marks a significant stride in achieving this goal,” he added.
