As a long-time Marvel fan who has watched every movie multiple times, I wholeheartedly agree with Sebastian Stan on his love for “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.” It was a game-changer for both the MCU and his character, Bucky Barnes. The film’s grounded approach, action sequences, and the introduction of the Winter Soldier were truly unparalleled.
Individuals who have watched the Marvel movies sequentially might easily identify their preferred films. For me, one such favorite is 2014’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.” Interestingly, franchise veteran Sebastian Stan also holds this film in high regard, considering it his top choice that showcases his character, Bucky Barnes. However, it appears that even the much-adored actor by fans isn’t entirely satisfied with the movie. Despite his fondness for it, he seems to have one aspect that he would alter within the beloved political thriller.
The character “Winter Soldier,” celebrating its tenth anniversary this year, remains one of the most cherished films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Directors Joe and Anthony Russo skillfully steered the production, while Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely’s script was insightful, and the entire cast delivered impressive performances. This dedication is evident in Sebastian Stan’s portrayal of the title character, who first appeared in this movie. Recently, on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast to promote his 2024 film releases, Stan shared why he continues to hold fondness for the Winter Soldier film within the MCU:
I hold a tender affection towards Captain America: The Winter Soldier, particularly because of its execution by the Russos and its grounded approach to action sequences. It’s the first time I’ve encountered such dynamic action content, and it introduced the concept of the Winter Soldier for the character.
More on Sebastian Stan
Sebastian Stan has confirmed that the script for Thunderbolts underwent significant revisions. However, he expressed his belief that these changes were beneficial for the project.
In the sequel to “A Different Man,” the actor’s performance differed significantly from his role in its 2011 predecessor, “The First Avenger.” In the earlier film, he portrayed a more conventional character as a sarcastic and brave war hero sidekick who occasionally poked fun at Steve Rogers. However, for the 2014 sequel, he focused more on subtle body language and sparse dialogue to depict the somber and menacing persona of HYDRA-controlled Barnes. This approach proved effective in conveying Barnes’ stoic and dangerous character.
It’s clear that the Winter Soldier stood out as one of the most formidable adversaries within the Marvel Cinematic Universe at that time. However, the actor from “Dumb Money” expressed a desire for the film to delve deeper into Bucky’s mental state, revealing more about his transformation from the man Steve Rogers once knew to the ruthless assassin molded by HYDRA.
I almost wish that we would’ve explored more of that. Because there’s that whole situation where he’s having memory lapse. Like some of his old memory is coming back, and he’s sort of short circuiting a little bit. And he wasn’t as brainwashed to a machine that he appears to be in that movie, if you look in the comic books. There is a Winter Soldier alter ego who’s never known that he was someone else but was functioning. And every time they would zap him and zap him and zap him, they would get him and desensitize him more and more. It’s actually quite fascinating.
Sebastian Stan raises a valid observation since viewers don’t often get insights into Bucky’s peculiar mental condition. This also applies to his capture post-fall in The First Avenger, as well as the immediate aftermath. Although brief flashbacks offer some clarification, Stan expresses a desire for more extensive exploration of these events.
Instead of just imagining, I pondered over how captivating it could be to explore his experience – waking up disoriented after the fall, unaware that he’d lost an arm, unsure of his surroundings, grappling with the loss of emotions, and transforming into something new. It would have been fascinating to witness this journey.
The depth of emotion portrayed by the “I, Tonya” actor in his character truly reflects how deeply he’s immersed himself in the role and the MCU journey. Although the Russos didn’t delve much into Bucky’s mental state, other Marvel productions like “Captain America: Civil War” and “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” have expanded on his past as an assassin, providing more insight into his character.
Currently, Sebastian Stan is delighted to remain part of the Marvel superhero universe, and he recently likened receiving a call for a new Marvel project to a kid on Christmas morning. In 2025, Stan will reappear as Barnes in an upcoming film titled “Thunderbolts.” In this movie, Barnes will effectively lead a team of antiheroes. Initially an assassin, Barnes has evolved significantly, and I’m looking forward to seeing what the future holds for him. However, much like Stan, I also can’t help but look back at his past.
