James Gunn Reveals He Almost Cast Aaron Pierre in Guardians of the Galaxy

As a movie reviewer with a keen eye for emerging talent and a soft spot for those who’ve paid their dues, I can’t help but feel a twinge of “what if?” when it comes to Aaron Pierre’s almost-role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The man’s breakthrough performance in Terry Richmond’s role on Netflix’s Rebel Ridge was nothing short of spectacular, and if he had donned the cape of Adam Warlock instead, we might have been in for an even more mind-blowing spectacle.

Following his standout role in this year’s hit movie “Rebel Ridge,” actor Aaron Pierre’s career has been on an upward trajectory, as confirmed by recent news that he will star in the upcoming DCU show “Lanterns” as John Stewart. However, before his appearance on HBO, it has been disclosed by James Gunn that Pierre almost featured in one of his previous Marvel Cinematic Universe projects: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Pierre previously portrayed Terry Richmond in a Netflix film released in September, a role that many consider to be a breakthrough for him and likely contributed to him securing the role of Stewart over other contenders such as Stephan James.

At New York Comic Con over the weekend (as reported by Collider), Gunn revealed an interesting tidbit: he nearly cast Pierre as Adam Warlock in the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which is set for release in 2023. However, the part ended up going to Will Poulter, who delivered an exceptional performance. Nonetheless, it’s intriguing to contemplate the alternate scenario where Pierre, instead, played the role of the former villain turned hero, adorning his cape.

For quite some time now, I’ve harbored a desire to collaborate with Aaron Pierre. What many may not realize is that he came very close to being cast as Adam Warlock. From the onset of his acting career, I’ve held him in high esteem and continue to be impressed by his talent.

Gunn noted that he would bring up the upcoming movie titled “Lanterns”, starring Friday Night Lights’ Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan. He expressed that witnessing these two actors read their lines together for the first time was a truly extraordinary experience, further stating: “I don’t mind what they’re discussing, I simply adore their interaction.

Originally unveiled in June this year, the upcoming series titled Lanterns follows newly recruited Stewart and veteran Jordan, portraying them as interstellar police officers drawn into a sinister earthbound enigma while probing a murder in the Midwest. The 8-episode production has appointed Chris Mundy (of True Detective: Night Country) as showrunner, with Damon Lindelof (from Watchmen) and DC Comics’ Tom King (author of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow) on board to executive produce and jointly pen the script.

For Gunn, who jointly holds the positions of co-chairperson and co-CEO at DC Studios with Peter Safran, he asserts that the upcoming series titled Lanterns will be remarkably distinct from any other superhero show viewers have encountered so far. He describes it as something that feels “very tangible” to him.

Initially, when we launched the DCU, our initial meetings with a team of writers included Tom King among them. In this gathering, we brainstormed ideas for the series Lanterns, which will stand out as unique and grounded, an unusual trait for a Green Lanterns show. This series will present something new and realistic that has yet to be explored.

Given such a description, along with Pierre and Chandler being part of it, we’re eagerly anticipating what Gunn and his team have planned for us after the release of Superman next year. Keep an eye out for Lanterns to premiere on HBO at some point in 2026.
