Superman And Lois Just Dealt The Newly-Revived Clark A Major Setback, And Lex Luthor Is Only Making Things Worse Behind The Scenes

As a longtime fan of Superman, I’ve seen my fair share of comics and adaptations, but the latest twist in the tale of Superman & Lois has left me utterly intrigued! The return of Tyler Hoechlin’s Clark Kent from the dead was inevitable, given the history of such events in superhero storylines. However, the diminished powers he now possesses after receiving Sam Lane’s heart are a refreshing departure from the norm.

Warning: SPOILERS for the Superman & Lois episode “A Perfectly Good Wedding” are ahead!

In the opening episode of Season 4 for Superman & Lois, it was Tyler Hoechlin’s Clark Kent who appeared to meet his end, but given the typical course of events in superhero stories, a permanent demise seemed unlikely. Indeed, the final moments of the previous week’s broadcast revealed that Clark had been revived following the transplant of Sam Lane’s heart, which contained a serum infused with Superman’s own blood. We are now three weeks into the season and running on the 2024 TV schedule, and Superman has reconnected with his loved ones once more, resuming his usual role… almost, but not quite, as he still shows some lingering effects.

In “A Perfectly Good Wedding,” we find Kyle Cushing and Chrissy Beppo busily preparing for their upcoming wedding. However, as it turned out, they ended up calling off the wedding but stayed together, with Kyle eventually gaining his mother-in-law’s approval. Meanwhile, Clark grappled with the fact that he wasn’t in perfect health after returning from the dead. To add to his troubles, Lex Luthor, who was conspicuously absent in this episode, continued to create problems for the Kent family, at least one major problem and potentially several others.

Superman’s Powers Have Diminished

When Sam Lane’s heart was transplanted into Clark Kent’s body, the Lara AI expressed worries about how his body would cope with the new organ, even if it meant reviving him. In fact, as events unfolded in “A Perfectly Good Wedding”, we notice that Clark’s powers seem to be dwindling. This is suggested by the persistent scar on his chest failing to heal, his stumble while flying alongside the newly-empowered Jonathan through the Arctic, and his sensitivity to alcohol, among other signs. Although it’s conceivable that these effects could be temporary, Clark and Lois began contemplating the possibility that they might become permanent.

To put it simply, Superman remains a formidable character, as demonstrated by his rescue of Jonathan from one of Lex Luthor’s henchmen (I’ll expand on that soon). However, we must contemplate the likelihood that for the rest of Superman & Lois Season 4, Clark might not be as potent as he was during the first three seasons. The silver lining is that now both his sons possess the same powers, which could compensate for this loss of strength. It’s worth noting that in this episode, Jonathan adopted the Superboy identity, while Jordan is taking a break from superhero activities to sort things out.

Lex Luthor Continues To Make The Kent Family’s Lives Difficult

“The Absence of Lex Luthor” marked the opening episode of Season 4, with Michael Cudlitz’s character conspicuously missing. However, his influence was undeniably present. After a series of careful listens, Jordan managed to track down Gretchen, the woman who deceived Sam Lane and imprisoned him on Lex Luthor’s command. Reluctant to venture into the field himself, Jordan delegated the task to Jonathan, sending Lois to confront Gretchen, whose true identity is Cheryl Kimble. Despite learning about Sam’s demise, Cheryl declined to aid Lois in incarcerating Luthor, having known him for three decades and understanding the potential repercussions of crossing him.

Regrettably for Cheryl, stepping out into the world while Luthor had advised her to stay hidden, angered him significantly. During Kyle and Chrissy’s nearly-wedding celebration, Jordan and Jonathan unintentionally heard about a fire breaking out at a mall in Metropolis. Rushing to save those trapped inside, Jonathan found himself battling the flames and discovered that not only was Cheryl among them, she was handcuffed to a metal gate. This suggested that the entire mall had been deliberately set ablaze with the intention of killing Cheryl specifically. To make matters worse, one of Luthor’s henchmen was lying in wait and launched an attack on Jonathan using advanced flamethrowers. Luckily, Superman arrived to save Jonathan, extinguish the remaining fire, and subdue the assailant. However, during this chaos, Cheryl managed to escape.

More Superman & Lois Coverage

In this role, I’m merely continuing the legacy set by Michael Rosenbaum and Jon Cryer – a tradition that fortunately doesn’t involve anyone losing their job.” (Paraphrasing ‘Nobody got fired so I could do Lex’, from Superman and Lois actor)

Superman And Lois Producer Teases Tom Cavanagh’s Mystery Role

In the TV series Superman & Lois, it’s believed that Superman is deceased at this stage. So, Clark arranged for John Henry Irons to take Luthor’s henchman to the Department of Defense (DOD) discreetly. Meanwhile, Lois intended to visit the DOD herself to keep the henchman silent about encountering the Man of Steel and possibly persuade him to betray Lex Luthor. Seems like a neat solution, doesn’t it? But no! In “A Perfectly Good Wedding,” just as Clark and Lois were getting close, their phones started buzzing with alerts from news sources announcing that Superman is indeed alive.

What seems to have transpired? Although we can’t confirm it completely yet, there are two scenarios suggesting Lex Luthor might be involved. One possibility is that Cheryl went back to him after seeing something, hoping to regain his favor. The second theory involves another mole within the DOD who overheard one of Luthor’s henchmen discussing their encounter with Superman and then informed Luthor about it. Regardless of which scenario is true, I find it hard to imagine any other party being responsible for leaking the information. As for why he didn’t simply unleash Doomsday again, this action could be seen as a petty move on his part, but it still fits with his character.
