AR Rahman practiced veena at midnight during his honeymoon, recalls brother-in-law: ‘He was composing…’

As a fortunate soul who has had the privilege of sharing a family bond with the enigmatic AR Rahman, I can attest to his extraordinary nature that defies ordinary comprehension. My personal journey, marked by its contrasting trajectory, serves as an intriguing counterpoint to the profound spirituality and artistic genius that is embodied in my brother-in-law.

Actor Rahman, who is connected to the well-known musician AR Rahman through marriage within their family, recently talked about their different characters in an interview. He portrayed Rahman as someone more spiritually inclined than himself and reminisced about a significant incident involving the composer’s unique approach to his honeymoon. Rahman remembered being awakened by a phone call from his sister in the middle of the night, only to find out that the composer was playing his veena and composing music in another room instead of spending his honeymoon in the traditional way.

During an interview with Siddharth Kannan, the actor was questioned about A.R. Rahman’s demeanor and their familial bond as brothers-in-law. In response, he shared that they are remarkably different individuals in terms of their personalities.

He went on to characterize Rahman as being more introverted and profoundly spiritual, whereas he himself stands out in stark contrast. He likened their disparities to the polarity between the northern and southern regions. He emphasized that Rahman is tranquil and extraordinarily committed.

He reminisced about a specific event and shared, “When he got married, he chose my sister-in-law for their honeymoon to a mountain retreat. I phoned them that evening, it was around 12 or so… She replied, she had already gone to sleep. I inquired, ‘Where is Rahman?’ She responded, ‘I’m not sure.’ He was in another room, working on his veena… He was creating something; he has that kind of dedication.

The actor stated that Rahman typically prefers his solitude and keeps clear of idle talk. On the other hand, he himself admitted to not engaging in gossip but finding it intriguing to listen to such conversations.

In his address at the Oxford Union, he pondered on the common hardships humans encounter, emphasizing that life is a short voyage. He suggested that despite everyone being born and eventually departing from this world, the final destination remains undisclosed and varies based on each person’s creativity and convictions.

In a recent conversation with The Week, the Academy Award winner shared that he no longer requires external approval and is instead dedicating his time to major film productions and various projects outside of film that resonate with his artistic impulses.

He reflected on his past achievements, stating that although he won Oscars for Jai Ho in Slumdog Millionaire a long time ago, it no longer holds significant value for him. He emphasized that he is now dedicated to creating work that resonates with him and will inspire future generations.
