As a movie enthusiast who has spent countless hours immersed in the world of action cinema, I can hardly contain my excitement about the impending expansion of the John Wick universe. The announcement that Donnie Yen‘s blind assassin, Caine, will be gracing our screens once more in his own solo film is like manna from heaven for me!
The universe associated with the action series “John Wick” is growing further, with exciting developments on the horizon. The first spin-off film, titled “Ballerina,” is due for release in 2025, and there’s been an intriguing update about a much-anticipated project within the franchise: the return of Donnie Yen as the blind assassin character Caine. Initially introduced in “John Wick: Chapter 4” last year, a standalone movie for Caine has been confirmed. However, details have been scarce since then. But now, film journalist Brandon Streussnig brings some positive news, disclosing that one of the producers of John Wick has verified the Caine movie is indeed in progress. Additionally, it was confirmed that Rina Sawayama’s Shimazu Akira will reappear as well.
Inquired about whether “we’re undoubtedly watching the Donnie/Rina film,” the anonymous producer affirmatively replied.
“Yes. Absolutely, yes.”
Following his outstanding performance as Caine in John Wick 4, Donnie Yen eagerly voiced his ambition to reprise his role for a spin-off. Fortunately, his wish came true when the movie was announced to be in development back in May. In a statement at that time, he expressed his delight working with Keanu Reeves on Wick and shared his excitement about delving into the character’s “troubled history.
Working on John Wick: Chapter 4 was an exceptionally memorable journey. The reason these films have such a profound impact is that, like us, Chad, Basil, and Erica tirelessly strive to craft action scenes, fights, and stunts that are not just exhilarating, imaginative, and artistic, but also reveal character development, plot progression, and emotional depth. Keanu Reeves’ character, John Wick, carries a heavy past, and I can’t wait to reprise the role again.
The John Wick Spin-Offs Begin With Ballerina on June 6, 2025
As a movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be penning a spin-off of the iconic John Wick character, created by Robert Askins (known for shows like “The Son” and “The Umbrella Academy”). This exciting venture is part of Chad Stahelski’s recent deal with Lionsgate, which aims to extend the “John Wick” universe. The deal encompasses various projects, such as the upcoming film “Ballerina” featuring Ana de Armas, a TV series, an anime project, and potentially “John Wick: Chapter 5”. I can hardly wait to bring this action-packed tale to life!
The action series starring John Wick has proven to be one of the most thriving franchises ever produced, and the studio undeniably anticipates this momentum will persist with their upcoming projects. Initially, we have the prequel spin-off titled “From the John Wick Universe: Ballerina,” set within the narrative of “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum.” The story revolves around Eve Macarro (played by Ana de Armas), as she embarks on her assassin training within the Ruska Roma traditions.
Under the direction of Len Wiseman (with Shay Hatten penning the script) and additional scenes helmed by Chad Stahelski due to Wiseman’s illness during production, From the John Wick Universe: Ballerina features an impressive cast including Anjelica Huston, Gabriel Byrne, Lance Reddick, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Norman Reedus, and Ian McShane. Joining them are Ana de Armas and the return of Keanu Reeves as the iconic character John Wick. The spin-off is set to have Wick, a skilled dog-loving hitman, engaging in a significant action sequence with de Armas’ emerging assassin.
