As a devoted fan who has been captivated by the gritty and intriguing world of Gotham City, I can wholeheartedly say that HBO’s The Penguin has taken my love for Batman’s universe to new heights. From its enigmatic narrative to the exceptional performances, this series has left me spellbound, particularly with Cristin Milioti’s mesmerizing portrayal of Sofia Gigante and Colin Farrell‘s Emmy-worthy transformation into Oz Cobblepot aka The Penguin.
Since its premiere on HBO, “The Penguin” spinoff series has held viewers spellbound through its unique portrayal of Gotham City, intriguing introductions of fresh characters such as Sofia Gigante, brilliantly portrayed by Cristin Milioti, and the award-worthy acting of Colin Farrell in the title role, Oz Cobb. While we initially encountered Oz in Matt Reeves’ “The Batman”, this series has delved deeper to reveal the complexities of this gangster character, as well as highlighting exceptional makeup work by the production team. It appears that Farrell himself contributed to this process, ensuring the illusion remained unbroken.

Subsequently discovered that Sofia (Milioti) was confined in Arkham Asylum by her family, she plotted her vengeance. She poisoned the entire team except for her niece Gia and Johnny Viti, portrayed by the exceptional Michael Kelly. After this dramatic episode, which proved disastrous for Viti, I had an opportunity to converse with Kelly about his role in The Penguin, and he shared fascinating tales of collaborating with this talented cast, especially Colin Farrell. As Kelly recounted to TopMob:
At the initial rehearsal, I encountered Colin for the first time and found him delightful. However, he wasn’t cast as The Penguin. Instead, he performed the accent. Surprisingly, during the rehearsal, he donned a ski mask – an incredibly cool move I had never witnessed before.
It’s no secret that fans were amazed by Colin Farrell’s transformation when he debuted as Oz in “The Batman.” His performance has only deepened our admiration as he delves even deeper into the character while playing The Penguin. As Michael Kelly further elaborated, this is not a recent development.
Yesterday, we conducted a Comic-Con panel, and for a moment, I found myself pausing and searching the stage for The Penguin. It was a strange feeling, almost as if I was wondering who was absent, only to realize that there actually is no Penguin in this context. It was quite surreal.
It’s remarkably impressive how Colin Farrell, as The Penguin, became so immersed in his role, mirroring his experience working alongside Jim Carrey on Man on the Moon where Carrey fully embodied comedian Andy Kaufman during filming. This is a sentiment also shared by Cristin Milioti, making the transformation all the more astounding.

We can only hope that this transformation continues to get Colin Farrell the awards recognition he deserves. It also makes me wonder if The Penguin will be a major part of The Batman: Part 2. Because this show is such a showcase for Farrell, I also want some of the other Batman villains to get proper treatment, as well. Give us The Penguin season 2, instead. But that’s just me being greedy.
Keep watching The Penguin with your HBO Max subscription. The end of the season is phenomenal.
