As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the high-octane world of Tom Cruise’s action flicks, I can’t help but feel a sense of awe and admiration for the man himself. Five years in Europe? That’s longer than my character has been alive in some games! But then again, when you’re Ethan Hunt, time seems to fly by as fast as a Ferrari on the Autobahn.
After a long stint in Europe, Tom Cruise’s work on “Mission: Impossible 8″ is wrapping up at last, signaling his imminent return to the United States. Normally, actors jet off for film or TV productions, but Cruise has been away longer than usual due to delays, rescheduling, and the choice of director Christopher McQuarrie to shoot two “Mission: Impossible” films consecutively.
As reported by The Sun, Tom Cruise has decided to move back to America after residing in the UK for more than five years. Initially, he may not have intended to stay in England for such a lengthy period, but unforeseen circumstances led him to remain abroad. In 2019, he journeyed to Europe when filming on Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning commenced, which was also the time we at TopMob began monitoring the production of the M:I series. Since it was planned to shoot the seventh and eighth installments simultaneously, being away for two years was probably anticipated.
2020 saw the emergence of COVID-19, causing global lockdowns that affected film productions industry-wide. Originally planned for a February 2020 start, the “M:I” series was among those impacted as COVID-19 pushed back the production schedule. Consequently, “Mission: Impossible 7” and 8 began filming during summer 2020, making them some of the first productions to resume under COVID-19 conditions. Despite resuming, these movies continued experiencing delays due to pandemic protocols at various shooting locations and the need for special clearance in numerous instances to proceed.
The seventh installment of Mission: Impossible, titled Mission: Impossible 7, debuted last summer. However, work on the eighth film continued. A few months following its 2023 release, a widespread writers and actors strike affected the entertainment industry, leading to more delays in filming. Originally scheduled for release in the summer of 2024, Mission: Impossible 8 was postponed again to 2025 due to another Hollywood labor dispute. The SAG strike concluded in November 2023, and production resumed at last. Given the movie’s grand scope, filming only recently wrapped up, allowing Tom Cruise to finally return home after spending five years on Mission.
All things considered, it makes sense that Cruise was essentially stuck in Europe for half a decade, but it’s still wild to think about. Even under the circumstances, The actor became a notable figure during the Paris Olympics, being a major part of the closing ceremony. The Jerry Maguire star also attended Taylor Swift’s Era’s Tour in between crazy stunts for Mission. He also periodically traveled back to the States to promote Top Gun: Maverick and M:I 7, both major filmmaking accomplishments. It’s almost hard to believe Cruise was in London as long as he was, and hopefully the world will see it was all worth it when M:I 8 finally hits theaters.
Tom Cruise will appear in “Mission: Impossible 8,” set to hit theaters on May 23, 2025. This film is among the most eagerly awaited releases for that year, so don’t forget to catch it when it comes out. Until then, enthusiasts of the series can reacquaint themselves with “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning” and other M:I films by subscribing to Paramount+.
