As a seasoned gamer and Marvel fan with over two decades of fandom under my belt, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment at the latest news regarding Blade. The prospect of Mahershala Ali donning the Daywalker’s iconic shades had me chomping at the bit since that fateful San Diego Comic Con announcement in 2019. Alas, it seems the road to vampire-slaying glory is fraught with more setbacks than a typical Tuesday in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
It appears that the upcoming Blade reboot featuring Mahershala Ali as the half-vampire character may no longer be happening as planned. The previously announced release date of November 7, 2025 has been replaced with a new Disney film called Predators: Badlands, which is part of another popular franchise.
Marvel Studios has set three new, unnamed movie releases for February 18, 2028, May 5, 2028, and November 10, 2028 instead. The absence of Blade from the schedule was expected due to Disney CEO Bob Iger’s statement in May during an earnings call that Marvel would only release a maximum of three films per year. Out of the four superhero movies set for 2025, which include Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Blade is the only project yet to start filming.
Over time, the production of the film Blade has experienced multiple changes in leadership – Bassam Tariq left in 2022, followed by Yann Demange stepping down this summer. Production on Blade was momentarily halted by Marvel Studios, causing a delay in its release date. Owing to the WGA strikes, COVID-19 complications, and other production hurdles, Blade has struggled to find its groove. In the past, Marvel has considered abandoning the project due to these challenges. Kevin Feige, in prior interviews, emphasized their longstanding efforts to perfect the movie, stating that they are dedicated to ensuring it’s not rushed and they create the ideal Blade film. The project was initially unveiled at San Diego Comic Con in 2019.
