Disney Sets Predator: Badlands for 2025 Theatrical Release

As a lifelong fan of the Predator franchise and someone who has witnessed its ebbs and flows over the years, I must say that the announcement of “Predator: Badlands” hitting the big screen in 2025 is nothing short of exhilarating! After the success of Prey on streaming platforms, it’s heartening to see Disney and 20th Century Studios taking a gamble on a theatrical release.

After the success of “Prey” on streaming platforms, 20th Century Studios and Disney plan to bring the “Predator” franchise back to cinemas in 2025. The popularity of “Prey”, which premiered on Hulu in 2022, has given a fresh surge to the “Predator” series. Several new “Predator” films have been announced, including a sequel to “Prey” and a film set in a future wasteland titled “Predator: Badlands“, which will be helmed by “Prey” director Dan Trachtenberg and feature Elle Fanning as the lead.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney has scheduled the release of “Predator: Badlands” for November 7, 2025. Originally, this date was assigned to Marvel Studios’ “Blade,” but due to production issues, it has been postponed indefinitely from Disney’s schedule. Even though only three years have passed since the release of “Prey” in 2022, “Badlands” will be the first cinematic Predator movie in seven years, following the box office flop of “The Predator” in 2018.

Romulus,” which was initially planned for a Hulu release like “Prey,” was instead moved to a theatrical release. This decision proved beneficial as “Alien: Romulus” earned $105 million domestically and $350 million globally, making it the second-highest-grossing film in the franchise, unadjusted for inflation.

Unlike most franchises which typically adhere to specific release seasons, the Predator series has shown a greater degree of adaptability, with past films premiering during both summer and holiday periods. Notably, Predator: Badlands marks the second Predator film to hit theaters in November, following Predator 2’s release on November 21, 1990.

Although the Predator series enjoys a significant fanbase, it hasn’t reached the blockbuster status of franchises like Terminator or Alien. This likely influenced Disney’s decision to release Prey as a streaming title initially. The positive buzz surrounding Prey has led many to wonder about its potential box office success if it had been released in theaters, and some are still hopeful for a theatrical re-release.

In the coming days, “Predator: Badlands” and Yorgos Lantihmos’ fresh film, “Bugonia,” will both premiere. “Now You See Me 3” is set to open a week later, while “Wicked – Part Two” follows in two weeks. Interestingly, Disney plans to release an R-rated sci-fi horror film at the start of November, as they anticipate the release of “Zootopia 2,” the sequel to their $1 billion hit from 2016, three weeks later over Thanksgiving weekend. This demonstrates the growth of the “Predator” franchise in just two years – moving from a direct-to-streaming release to a new installment hitting cinemas.
