Stranger Things' Millie Bobby Brown Explains Why She's Genuinely Terrified Of Jamie Campbell Bower's Vecna Costume: 'That Is A Gremlin'

As a long-time gamer and fan of both Stranger Things and horror games, I can totally relate to Millie Bobby Brown’s fear of Vecna’s costume. I remember when I first played Silent Hill as a kid, the monsters with their masked faces gave me the chills too! It’s fascinating how these on-screen characters can evoke such strong emotions in real life.

Since Netflix’s blockbuster series Stranger Things introduced Eleven to our screens and we all marveled at her mysterious presence, it was clear she wasn’t someone to trifle with. Much of this aura stems from Millie Bobby Brown, the talented actress who brings the supernatural character to life, handling monsters like the Demogorgan and demodogs with apparent nonchalance. Despite coming across as cool, composed, and collected on screen, it seems her calm demeanor vanishes when off-camera, as she admitted to being genuinely frightened by Jamie Campbell Bower’s Vecna, particularly his eerie costume.

During the filming of Stranger Things‘ fifth season, Brown participated in The Upside Down event at Epic Con, where she expressed her thoughts on the chilling Vecna costume. In a TikTok video posted by @schylerdixon, the talented actress playfully discussed her character’s transformation from friend to foe and her distaste for costumes that hide people’s faces, stating:

I’m terrified of his costume, it scares me. I don’t like masks, which is crazy because I’m at Comic-Con, but I don’t like people covering their faces, it freaks me out. It’s definitely a phobia, and I’ve had it since I was little. And so he comes onto set, and I’m like ‘Who is that?’ They’re like ‘It’s Jamie.’ I’m like ‘That’s not Jamie, that is a Gremlin that lives in my closet and is waiting for me to fall asleep to kill me.’ And they’re like ‘No, no it’s Jamie.’ I’m like ‘No, I’m not coming on the set.’ So, I go in my tent, I literally sob. And Jake [Bongiovi], he’s like ‘You gotta calm down. It’s fine, you’re gonna be fine. You have to find something that reminds you of Jamie.’ And I’m like ‘Nothing reminds me of Jamie! He has slimy hands and feet. It was horrible!’ So, then I close my eyes, and I smell on [Jamie’s] breath cigarettes, and I was like ‘That’s Jamie.’

Thankfully, Brown managed to discover an item that helped alleviate her apprehension about the Vecna costume. It’s understandable that she would feel scared given the fact that this ominous character was loosely based on the chilling adversary from Game of Thrones. Indeed, he is downright terrifying and it’s safe to say that his menacing nature might escalate further, as the finale of Stranger Things Season 4 merely hinted at a climax rather than an ending.

I’m eagerly anticipating whether we’ll have more tales similar to this one leading up to Stranger Things Season 5, as we draw nearer.

Although details about Season 5 are still scarce, we do have some insights: This will be the final season and it’s generating immense excitement as fans eagerly await the resolution and the destiny of our cherished characters. Given that Vecna seems to be a significant force in the storyline, I’m relieved Millie Bobby Brown has found a means to cope with her apprehension towards the terrifying costume.

To revisit the costume that reportedly spooked Millie Bobby Brown (Eleven’s actress), simply stream seasons 1-4 of “Stranger Things” on Netflix with a subscription. Keep an eye out for further news about Season 5, which may bring additional amusing (and scary) tales like this one.
