As a seasoned entertainment enthusiast with years of experience under my belt, I must say that this event seems like a grand spectacle, reminiscent of the glitz and glamour of Hollywood’s golden age. The cast and crew, hailing from different corners of the globe, have come together to bring us “The Day of the Jackal,” a project that promises to be nothing short of riveting.
On Tuesday evening, it was reported that The Jackal had escaped in London. Some of the stars from the upcoming TV adaptation of “The Day of the Jackal” on Sky and Peacock were present at the U.K. premiere of the series held at Queen Elizabeth Hall in the British capital. These notable figures included Eddie Redmayne, Lashana Lynch, and Úrsula Corberó, who is famous for her role as Tokyo in Netflix’s “Money Heist.
Eddie Redmayne portrays the renowned fictitious assassin in the original series, which is inspired by Frederick Forsyth’s novel and the critically acclaimed 1973 film adaptation of the same title from Universal Pictures. Notably, Redmayne was also involved in the production as an executive producer for this show.
In the latest trailer reveal for this series I’m excited about, I’ll be joining forces with acting greats like Charles Dance from Game of Thrones and The Crown, Richard Dormer who graced both Fortitude and Game of Thrones, Chukwudi Iwuji known for Guardians of the Galaxy and The Split, Lia Williams recognized in The Capture and The Crown, Khalid Abdalla starring in The Crown and The Kite Runner, Eleanor Matsuura from The Walking Dead and I Used To Be Famous, Jonjo O’Neill seen in Andor and Bad Sisters, Sule Rimi who appeared in Classified and Andor, and Nick Blood hailing from Euphoria. Can’t wait to see what we create together!
The Day of the Jackal is being marketed by the producers as a “daring, up-to-date retelling” of the well-loved and esteemed novel and movie. While maintaining the essence of the original narrative, which revolved around an attempt to assassinate French president Charles de Gaulle in 1962, this contemporary drama will offer a more detailed exploration of the “antihero” protagonist who exhibits chameleon-like qualities. The thriller promises to be an action-packed, cinematic adventure that follows the cat-and-mouse chase across various global locations, all set against the tumultuous political backdrop of the present day.
On Tuesday evening, a Q&A session took place after the London premiere of episode 1, featuring actors Eddie Redmayne, Skeet Ulrich, Pedro Corberó, screenwriter and producer Ronan Bennett from Top Boy, director Brian Kirk known for Game of Thrones, and executive producers Gareth Neame and Nigel Marchant from Carnival Films.
Redmayne mentioned that both the initial film and Frederick Forsyth’s novels significantly impacted him. He admitted he had a lot of apprehension about assuming the famous role. He also expressed his fondness for the ‘cat and mouse’ dynamic, which the 10 episodes of the series expanded to delve deeper into the complex human traits and nuances of the characters.
Lynch commented that “Jackal” serves as an exceptional illustration of modernizing Intellectual Property, particularly by “giving a more human touch to service women.” She shared conversations with numerous real-life servicewomen about their work and the challenges they face balancing work and family life. She appreciated the opportunity to depict a complex woman on screen who isn’t perfect, stating that sometimes “we just don’t have all the answers.
Regarding their working relationship and acting alongside Redmayne, Corberó jokingly commented that it was “awful” and she’s yet to recover from it. After a fit of laughter, she admitted she’d been praising him all day, finally adding: “He’s exceptional. He’s flawless.
Redmayne expressed his immense satisfaction in embodying the Jackal character, switching between multiple roles and masks. He praised the outstanding performances delivered by the entire cast, the exceptional work of the prosthetics, costume, and other departments. Not forgetting to mention, he playfully acknowledged his “resilient German trainer” as well.
When inquired about what she enjoyed most about the Jackal experience, Lynch expressed her pride in being able to “stand for West London” since her screen character resides near Portobello Road and she herself is from Shepherd’s Bush.
Redmayne concluded the discussion by admitting that he felt profound embarrassment, having to perform on a mechanical bull for a horse-riding scene instead of a real horse, despite having trained for the latter, given his previous “disastrous” experiences with such scenes.
At the red carpet event before the screening, Redmayne expressed during an interview with Sky’s official representative that the series is a modern adaptation of a story he cherished in his youth. It incorporates digital technology yet maintains certain traditional aspects and characteristics he appreciated from the original.
The program is quite extensive, taking us to various destinations like Budapest, Vienna, and more. He spoke with great enthusiasm about this journey, yet admitted he felt a touch of homesickness. But now, he’s thrilled to return the show to its roots in London.
Redmayne pointed out that the television series can be appreciated by individuals who haven’t watched the initial movie or read the book. However, for those already familiar with them, there will be plenty to ponder, such as a segment where the director meticulously re-created a scene from the film shot by shot.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but sing praises for this remarkable series, labeling it as top-notch television. My character, without a doubt, is the finest gunsmith one could find anywhere on Earth.

Lynch mentioned about Redmayne during an interview that “our friendship grew significantly” while working together as producers on the project, despite the fact that they didn’t spend a lot of time together on set like most co-stars often do.
She expressed that after watching the initial three episodes, she found herself seeking a valid excuse not to participate in another production based in the MI6 universe, as the James Bond actress confided. However, she clarified, “No, I’m fine. I’ve taken on this legacy role before, but they truly drew me back into it.
The story and characters were our main priorities. We delved straight into exploring the psychological aspects of women in this espionage setting, which is rarely explored or discussed. I truly hope this series challenges the norms within the industry.
Corbero expressed surprise about the grandeur of her first premiere in London, stating that her character initially seemed ‘vulnerable’ upon reading the first three episodes. She particularly enjoys seeing characters discover their inner strength.
Upon reaching the carpet, blood humorously recounted his amusing experience upon arriving in Hungary for filming. “Upon my initial landing in Budapest,” he shared during an interview with Sky, “I had just stepped off the plane when two ladies greeted me warmly: ‘Hi, Nick!’ I followed them.” He continued, “They then showed me photographs to sign. They were admirers, but I almost hopped into their car and ended up going home with them.
Neame expressed on the red carpet that he and Marchant hold the original “Jackal” movie in high regard, which is why they wouldn’t have just remade it. Instead, they felt it was something they admired too deeply, so they opted to transform the story into a modern 10-episode series. In essence, Neame stated that this new format would offer a distinctive take on drama.
Marchant praised Redmayne for his exceptional diligence and careful attention throughout his career, stating, “He truly embodied the spirit of an Englishman.
Cécile Frot-Coutaz, head of Sky Studios and content chief for Sky, recently referred to the series Jackal as a “significant production” for us, stating: “This might be one of our most daring or extensive projects so far. It’s an epic action thriller.” (Paraphrased)
On Tuesday, she expressed that “this project means a great deal to us” and it has been “of significant importance” for the entire Comcast organization.
She praised the three leading actors who were present, for delivering such deep and fascinating performances on screen.
