As a longtime fan of Dancing with the Stars, I must say this latest episode left me in a bit of a conundrum. On one hand, I was thrilled to see Ilona Maher bring the character Luisa from Encanto to life on the dance floor. She truly embodied the strength and grace of the Madrigal matriarch, and her performance was nothing short of spectacular.
heads up! you’re about to encounter spoilers from the Dancing With The Stars Season 33’s Disney Night episode. if you have a Disney+ subscription, feel free to stream it, but beware – read at your own peril!
It was all eyes on Ilona Maher the moment she announced on TikTok she’d be dancing to an Encanto song and bringing the character Luisa to the ballroom in the best way possible. Maher certainly looked like the strongest sister of the family Madrigal, and on Dancing With The Stars‘ “Disney Night,” she proved she had some smooth moves too. It was a big night for her and nearly perfect if it wasn’t for one horrifying element of the performance.
On a night when I thought there might be a bit of complaining about the song selections for Disney Night, I was taken aback by the unusual costume choice made by professional dancer Alan Bersten. It was amusing to see other fans’ equally surprised reactions. Although the pro dancer did his job admirably, as we’ve come to expect, it’s understandable if someone momentarily forgot what show they were watching due to the eerie, donkey-human hybrid character on the dance floor.
Alan’s Donkey Costume Was Legitimate Nightmare Fuel
Without a doubt joke-free, when I witnessed Alan on “Dancing With The Stars” in the recent episode, it was as if a shock had been sprung upon me. My survival instincts kicked in, and I momentarily believed there had been an error, that we were about to witness a dance inspired by “Pinocchio.” Once my initial fright subsided, I found myself more puzzled than anything else, wondering how the “DWTS” wardrobe team managed to create such a realistic donkey visage for Alan. Frankly, I’m not certain if real donkeys could be this unsettling.
Additionally, it’s worth mentioning that the backup dancers on stage wore adorably designed donkey costumes. Throughout the performance, I found myself pondering why he didn’t choose something similar to their outfits instead of the questionable visual spectacle he presented to the audience. Julianne Hough didn’t seem to address it much, maybe due to concerns about being near him if she mentioned his name three times, though I won’t delve into any potential post-dance conversations with her again.
Check out some of the amusing responses that fans had after watching:
- Alan as a donkey is gonna be my new sleep paralysis demon #dwts – @sarahkbar
- Alan just scared the shit out of me #DWTS – @edisonsbulb
- Alan in a HIDEOUS donkey costume…. this show is so insane #dwts – @selsjackets
- #DWTS has gone way too far. That is easily the most terrifying thing I have ever seen. Alan, dude, you’re killing me. – @mdburnell
- ALAN I WAS NOT EXPECTING THIS HAHAHA #DWTS – @emkessel
The event was incredibly surprising, almost reaching the level of Anna Delvey’s post-elimination interviews in terms of impact. I wonder how Alan feels now that he’s back online, having seen the responses to his donkey costume following their performance. It’s likely that even Anna Delvey would find it intriguing to see people talking positively about her again, but my focus is on Alan’s reaction to this newfound attention.
Ilona’s Big Night Put Her Toward The Top Of The Leaderboard
Danny Amendola’s tenure on ‘Dancing With The Stars’ was brief, which makes me question my initial assumption that he would be a strong contender. This week, however, it was Ilona Maher who truly stood out. Her combined score of 52 points (individual and team competition scores) placed her in a tie for second position with ‘The Bachelor’s Joey Graziadei.
Her position significantly improved following a near catastrophic performance about fortnight ago. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that she maintains this positive progression and continues to compete at the forefront of the rankings.
