Venom: The Last Dance Director Confirms the Actor Playing Marvel Villain, Knull

As a cinephile who has weathered countless blockbusters and indie films alike, I must say that my journey through the Sony Spider-Man Universe has been a rollercoaster ride of emotions – and not always in a good way. The latest addition to this universe, Venom: The Last Dance, is no exception.

After numerous whispers and guesses, it is now officially revealed who portrays the renowned actor as the Marvel supervillain Knull in the upcoming Sony Spider-Man Universe film, “Venom: The Last Dance”. As many had suspected, it turns out to be the star from “Lord of the Rings” and director of “Venom: Let There Be Carnage”, who will don the pale skin and black eyes of the Symbiote God. The character and actor are anticipated to have a significant impact on the Spider-Man Universe in the future.

According to an interview with THR, Kelly Marcel, the director of Venom 3, confirmed (and the movie’s end credits hint at this too) that Andy Serkis is indeed playing Knull. The filmmaker also shared her experience of directing the director who previously worked on a Venom film.

(Laughs heartily.) Oh my goodness, I adore Andy [Serkis]! Everyone feels the same way about him. When we were planning Venom 2, we knew he’d be perfect for the Knull character – if we could manage to incorporate him into the film. He was the first and only person we approached, and naturally, he was overjoyed and eager. He’s an exceptional voice actor, truly one of the best. Since Knull is also motion capture and CGI, it was a pleasure working together. It felt like a reunion, especially since Andy and I are friends. Spending time with him on this project was simply delightful, and it seemed like coming full circle in a way.

In a creative work penned by Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman, Knull stands out as one of Marvel’s most formidable antagonists. This malevolent deity is not just a villain, but the originator of the symbiotes. Although Knull has limited screen time in “Venom: The Last Dance,” his influence mirrors that of Thanos within the MCU, posing a significant threat to the Sony Spider-Man Universe and potentially uniting various antiheroes such as Morbius, Kraven, and Madame Web. However, critical reception and box office performance hint that audiences may not be enthusiastic about seeing these characters team up.

Venom: The Last Dance Continues the Franchise’s ‘Rotten’ Streak

As a dedicated cinephile, I’ve got to admit that I was hopeful about Venom: The Last Dance, especially with Tom Hardy’s captivating portrayal of Jekyll and Hyde. However, the film seems to be perpetuating the disappointing trend of this franchise. Currently, it stands at 38% on Rotten Tomatoes after 68 reviews, a score that aligns with the initial Venom’s 30% and Venom: Let There Be Carnage’s 57%. Even our very own Julian Roman from MovieWeb found some entertainment in this superhero road trip movie, but he also grappled with boredom due to an unengaging storyline and excessive runtime.

“Venom: The Last Dance” promises excitement, laughter, and a touch of boredom relief, all wrapped up in a storyline that stretches beyond its screen time. This third and concluding chapter in the Venom saga, based on the alien symbiote spin-off of Spider-Man, can be aptly compared to a bag of Halloween treats. For every slow, sugary candy corn scene, there’s a delightful, satisfying Snickers moment. The enjoyment you derive from this film will largely depend on your passion for Venom as a character.

Under the direction of Kelly Marcel, the film titled “Venom: The Last Dance” features Tom Hardy portraying both Eddie Brock and Venom. This action-packed movie also stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Juno Temple, Rhys Ifans, Peggy Lu, Alanna Ubach, and Stephen Graham. In this storyline, the dynamic duo of Eddie and Venom are on the run.
