As a seasoned movie critic with over three decades of experience under my belt, I must say that I am thrilled about the return of “Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft” for Season 2! Having grown up playing the iconic video game series, I can attest to the fact that Lara Croft’s adventures have always been a source of endless entertainment.
Exciting update for Lara Croft enthusiasts! Following a triumphant first season, the Netflix animated show titled “Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft” is making a comeback! This series, which set new records for the Tomb Raider franchise on Rotten Tomatoes, will continue to captivate fans of the namesake video game series, as Netflix has confirmed the renewal of “Tomb Raider” for another season.
Since 1996, the Tomb Raider video games initially developed by British studio Core Design have followed the journey of a daughter of a well-known British archaeologist who has gone missing, as she picks up her father’s work and delves into ancient ruins and tombs. The first season of the animated series produced by Powerhouse Animation brilliantly portrayed Croft’s character through the creativity of a group of dedicated women. Now, a new woman is joining the team to continue unraveling Lara’s thrilling escapades.
In the sequel of “Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft”, Lara Croft and her close gaming companion, documentary filmmaker Sam Nishimura, join forces once more for another thrilling escapade. Previously in the 2013 game “Tomb Raider”, their friendship was tested as Lara searched for Sam after she was kidnapped during their initial quest. For Season 2 of this popular series, the creators are bringing these friends back together for an entirely new adventure. Netflix recently announced on X (formerly Twitter) that Sam and Lara would be reappearing, promising fans a fresh tale of adventure to look forward to.
Lara and Sam’s Past Adventures Might Give Hints To Where They’re Going Next
In the debut of Sam in the 2013 game, our duo was en route to Yamatai, an old Japanese land known by its Sino-Japanese name, where Lara was on a quest for a tomb. However, their journey takes an unexpected turn when a storm capsizes the ship they were traveling on, causing them to become separated. Later, Lara manages to locate Sam, but finds that she has befriended someone named Mathias. In a twist of events, Mathias abducts the filmmaker after learning about the tomb from her.
Will the duo venture into the mysterious land of Yamatai, or is showrunner Tasha Huo, a dedicated fan of “Tomb Raider,” planning something entirely fresh for them? Given that Lara’s friend features in the “Tomb Raider” Dark Horse comics and considering the rich lore spanning across 20 games, three movies, an animated Netflix series, and more, Huo has a wealth of content to draw from for the upcoming narrative. With the franchise offering such diverse storytelling opportunities, Huo essentially has free rein to take the tale wherever she desires.
Despite some Tomb Raider enthusiasts being hesitant about Lara Croft’s Netflix adaptation, there is still hope that the series could surpass viewers’ expectations. The exact direction of the animated series featuring Lara and Sam remains undecided, but many fans are intrigued by the possibility of a fresh adventure. Although it’s uncertain how closely the animated show will follow Sam’s original storyline, we can anticipate seeing a new interpretation of the character.
