Star Wars' Mandalorian & Grogu Reportedly Finished Filming

As a seasoned cinema enthusiast who has witnessed the rise and fall of many a beloved franchise, I must admit that the latest developments in the Star Wars saga have left me both excited and apprehensive. Having grown up with the original trilogy and experiencing the thrill of each new addition to this galaxy far, far away, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia as The Mandalorian & Grogu has finally wrapped filming, promising to continue the story started on Disney+.

The Force is strong with at least one Star Wars film as it has wrapped filming. It has been five years since the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. While that normally wouldn’t be a long time to wait between Star Wars films, as fans waited 16 years between Return of the Jedi and The Phantom Menace, it is a long time considering that when Disney bought Lucasfilm back in 2012, their goal was to have a new Star Wars movie out every year. Four Star Wars films are now in active development, including a crossover film between various Disney+ series directed by Dave Filoni, James Mangold’s first Jedi movie, a film centered on Rey set 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker, and The Mandalorian & Grogu.

As reported by Puck News, the film titled “The Mandalorian & Grogu,” helmed by director Jon Favreau, has completed its shooting. This movie is expected to carry on the narrative initiated in the Disney+ series “The Mandalorian.” Interestingly, it seems that this feature film might take over where Season 4 of the series would have left off. Filming for The Mandalorian & Grogu commenced in August 2024 and appears to have been concluded about two years prior to its scheduled release date on May 22, 2026. When “The Mandalorian & Grogu” hits theaters, it will mark seven years since “The Rise of Skywalker.

News about The Mandalorian and Grogu coincides with updates suggesting that writer Steven Knight has left the Star Wars movie focused on Rey. It remains uncertain if this film will meet its speculated December 2026 launch date. Notably, neither Disney nor Lucasfilm have officially declared a release date for the Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy-directed movie. The December 2026 release date is merely assigned as Lucasfilm has set that slot for an unannounced project.

What is the Future of Star Wars?

In recent times, the Star Wars franchise has developed a notorious reputation for launching projects that ultimately fail to take flight. Unlike other film franchises, none have garnered as much attention for their unrealized plans as Star Wars. Filmmakers such as Josh Trank, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, Patty Jenkins, and Taika Waititi have all had projects in the Star Wars universe announced, but they’ve never come to fruition. On the other hand, productions like Rogue One, Solo, and The Rise of Skywalker all experienced director changes before reaching screens. However, Star Wars is now shifting its focus from investing primarily in Disney+ streaming series towards regaining its dominance in cinemas. This transition seems to be a factor behind the cancellation of series like The Acolyte, the conclusion of Andor with its upcoming second season, the replacement of The Mandalorian Season 4 with a movie, and no new television series beyond Ahsoka Season 2 being announced.

There’s a possibility that if James Cameron requires additional time for the production of Avatar: Fire and Ash, the release date of this movie might shift to December 2026, which is currently reserved by Disney for an unspecified Star Wars film. If this happens, The Mandalorian & Grogu could take its place on December 19, 2025, as it appears that filming has been wrapped up. However, if The Mandalorian & Grogu doesn’t change slots, it will premiere only three weeks after Avengers: Doomsday. Disney aims to prevent a repeat of the situation where Solo: A Star Wars Story was released a month after Avengers: Infinity War and may face competition.
