1 year of 12th Fail: 5 lesser-known facts from Vikrant Massey, Medha Shankr and Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s film that will make you rewatch it

As I reminisce about the captivating journey that 12th Fail embarked upon a year ago today, I find myself deeply moved by the intricate details that went into making this masterpiece. The story of Manoj Kumar Sharma’s resilience and determination to succeed, despite his initial failures, resonates profoundly with my own life experiences.

Today marks a year since the release of Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s 12th movie, “Fail,” featuring Vikrant Massey and Medha Shankr. This film was widely praised for its genuine storytelling and captivating performances from every character. To commemorate this special day, let’s take a look back at some intriguing behind-the-scenes facts about the movie you may not be aware of.

12th Fail is a biographical drama film that tells the story of IPS officer Manoj Kumar Sharma, who initially failed his 12th grade exams. Despite these setbacks, he persevered through adversity and eventually passed the extremely challenging UPSC examination. The movie also highlights the role of Shraddha Joshi, now his wife, as a source of encouragement and motivation throughout his journey.

1. Rajkumar Hirani was supposed to direct the 12th Fail

12th Fail, featuring Vikrant Massey and Medha Shankr, was originally intended to be directed by Rajkumar Hirani. But while working on the script with fresh writers, Vidhu Vinod Chopra found himself drawn to the characters and developed a keen interest in directing the movie himself.

At first, Chopra hesitated to take on the task of directing the movie because he hadn’t directed anything similar before. Yet, once he viewed Massey’s trial run, his determination grew strong and he decided to step up as the director himself.

2. The widespread casting process

12th Fail underwent an in-depth casting selection involving over 35 candidates vying for the significant characters of Shraddha Joshi, Pritam Pandey, Gauri Bhaiya, Ranveer, Pushpa, and Dadi. Eventually, these roles were taken up by Medha Shankar, Anant V Joshi, Anshumaan Pushkar, Geeta Agrawal Sharma, and Sarita Joshi respectively.

3. Actors like Sanjay Dutt, Anil Kapoor, and Farhan Akhtar were considered for Dushyant Singh’s role

Initially, notable actors such as Sanjay Dutt, Anil Kapoor, Farhan Akhtar, Jaaved Jaaferi, and Ram Charan were under consideration for the role of DSP Dushyant Singh. Nevertheless, it was ultimately given to Priyanshu Chatterjee, since the filmmakers believed that a brief appearance might disrupt the authenticity of the movie.

Notably, Priyanshu Chatterjee and Vidhu worked together in the 2020 film Shikara.

4. Vikrant Massey didn’t apply make-up to achieve his rural look in the village

As a lifestyle enthusiast, let me share an intriguing observation about Massey’s commitment to his craft. Instead of relying on makeup, he opted for authenticity, immersing himself deeply into the role. To achieve the rural, rustic look required for the film, he spent weeks soaking up the sun in a village, donning a vest each day to ensure an even tan. This commitment to authenticity truly speaks volumes about his dedication to his art.

Previously in an interview with GQ India, Vikrant mentioned that he meticulously prepared for the film over a period of one and a half years. The months preceding the shoot were jam-packed with intensive workshops and reading sessions. He had to shed weight and darken his skin tone. During the tanning process, unfortunately, his skin got sunburned, causing him to worry that we might need to delay the shoot by several weeks.

5. Medha Shankr actually sang in the film

One of the pivotal scenes of Dilli Haat features Shraddha singing a song during a truth and dare game. Interestingly, the actress actually sang the song at the live location. During initial film screenings, a section of the audience thought it was too perfect, like a playback recording. Thus, the sound editors were asked to deliberately change the levels of her singing to make it sound more authentic.
