As a huge fan of “New Girl,” I find myself constantly amazed by the impressive list of celebrities who have graced our screens as guests. The show seems to have a magical ability to attract some of the most talented actors and actresses in Hollywood, and it’s always exciting to spot them in various roles.
Discovering the joy of sharing living space with roommates has never been more entertaining, thanks to FOX’s comedy series, “New Girl.” Despite having wrapped up production years ago, it continues to be one of the most entertaining TV shows to revisit. Besides enjoying the numerous humorous episodes in the loft, the show also offers a fun experience due to the many popular actors who made guest appearances throughout its run. Although there are far too many to list here, we’ve gathered some of the most prominent stars that graced the show with their presence.
Jamie Lee Curtis
In the second season’s episode titled “Parents,” the Oscar-winning actress Jamie Lee Curtis appeared as Zooey Deschanel’s character Jess Day’s mother. Her casting was fitting given the eccentric vibe of the sitcom’s protagonist, and she made a total of six appearances on the show following her first one in Season 2.
Taylor Swift
Although Taylor Swift might not be your initial thought when considering an actor, it’s worth noting that her versatility has led her to accumulate acting roles in productions such as “The Lorax,” “Cats,” and “Amsterdam.” Furthermore, her music videos are nothing short of cinematic epics. To add to this, Swift graced the screen in the Season 2 finale of “New Girl” when Cece was getting married to Shivrang. In a surprising twist at the altar, the groom called off the wedding to express his desire to marry Taylor’s character, Elaine, instead.
Prince
A standout moment from the TV series New Girl is undoubtedly when the characters get an invitation to party at the residence of none other than Prince… and they actually get to meet him! This exciting encounter occurred in Season 3, made possible by the legendary musician expressing a desire to be part of the show due to his appreciation for the comedy. The scene where Nick and Jess have a frenzied reaction upon seeing him is truly unforgettable.
Tiffany Haddish
Actress and humorist Tiffany Haddish, known for her role in “Girls Trip”, appeared as a minor character in the third season episode titled “Exes”. She was Damon Wayans Jr.’s character Coach’s date, named Leslie. The plot revolved around Schmidt deciding to live independently, encouraging Winston and Coach to utilize the apartment for their romantic encounters whenever they wished. In a humorous scene, all three characters ended up there at the same time, causing Leslie’s character to become alarmed.
Rob Reiner
In a shift back to the world of sitcoms, the renowned actor and director Rob Reiner, known for hits like “The Princess Bride,” “When Harry Met Sally,” “Misery,” “This Is Spinal Tap,” and “Stand By Me,” appeared as Jess Day’s father, Bob, in several episodes of “New Girl.” Over the course of the series, he graced the screen in a total of eleven episodes, making an appearance in almost every season.
Lisa Bonet
In the fourth season of “The Cosby Show,” Lisa Bonet, playing the role of Brenda Brown – an educational expert, appeared as a guest star in the episode titled “Teachers.” During this episode, Jess and Coach happened to encounter Brenda. The interaction between them caused Coach’s behavior during a presentation to be criticized by Brenda, which led him to no longer act as a buffer for Jess when it came to her unrequited feelings towards a British teacher she was infatuated with at her school.
Kaitlin Olson
In a fun twist, I, a dedicated fan, am excited to share that Kaitlin Olson, known for her hilarious role in “It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia,” graced our screens in two episodes during Season 4 of “New Girl.” She portrayed Bob Day’s younger fiancée, who, as fate would have it, was an old high school rival to both Jess and Cece. Quite the comedic turn of events!
Josh Gad
As a dedicated admirer, I’d like to share that the talented Josh Gad, who charmed us in “The Book of Mormon” and gave life to Olaf in “Frozen,” graced three different episodes of “New Girl.” These appearances took place in Seasons 2, 3, and 4. In each episode, he portrayed a character named Bearclaw, who developed an endearing affection for Jess. His debut was in the episode “Katie,” where their blind date didn’t quite work out, but he also appeared in “Birthday” and “Walk of Shame.
Dermot Mulroney
Actor Dermot Mulroney, known for his role in “My Best Friend’s Wedding”, played the character “Fancyman” on the popular sitcom “New Girl”. He appeared in eight episodes over the series, winning favor among viewers particularly during Season 1. In the two-part episode titled “Fancyman”, he was introduced as a wealthy father of one of Jess’s students, with whom she develops a romantic relationship.
Olivia Rodrigo
Indeed, Olivia Rodrigo, who gained immense fame as a pop star after starring in “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series,” previously appeared on “New Girl.” In the sixth season episode titled “Young Adult,” Rodrigo portrayed Terrinea, one of Jess’s students who becomes an ardent fan of Nick Miller’s novel “The Pepperwood Chronicles.” To win her students’ favor, including Terrinea, Jess arranges a meeting between a few of them and Nick.
Megan Fox
During Season 5 of “New Girl”, Zooey Deschanel was pregnant in real life, but her character Jess Day wasn’t ready for motherhood yet in the show. So, they wrote her off temporarily for maternity leave and introduced Megan Fox’s character Reagan as a temporary replacement. Reagan appeared in 15 episodes of the series. Besides “New Girl”, Megan Fox is renowned for her roles in the “Transformers” films, “Jennifer’s Body”, and the live-action “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” movie.
Alan Ritchson
Prior to Alan Ritchson appearing in the hit Amazon Prime series “Reacher”, the actor previously made an impression on “New Girl” in the episode titled “Micro”. In this Season 4 installment, Ritchson showcased his comic talent by portraying a love interest of Jess’s, Matt, who she finds difficulty moving past the fact that he has a small penis.
Henry Winkler
I was thrilled to see Henry Winkler, famously known for his roles in “Happy Days” and “Barry,” make a guest appearance on “New Girl.” Sharing screen time with the talented Julie Hagerty and Taran Killam in the Season 5 episode titled “What About Fred,” I found myself charmed by the lively characters portrayed by Winkler and Hagerty as Flip and Nancy, who added an unexpected spark to Jess’s dull dating situation with Fred (Killam).
Parker Posey
In the second season of “New Girl,” Parker Posey, famously known as the “Queen of Independent Cinema” during the 1990s, made a memorable guest appearance. In the episode titled “Re-Launch,” Schmidt hosts a rebranding party for himself and Parker Posey portrayed an unkempt shot girl who turned out to be less than she was advertised.
John Cho
As an ardent fan, I can’t hide my excitement when I share that “Star Trek”‘s John Cho graced our screens on “New Girl” during Season 5, in the episode titled “Jury Duty.” In this intriguing plotline, my beloved character Jess found herself in a tricky situation, yearning to dodge jury duty. She enlisted her friends for help, but alas, her attempts to charm her way out were as unsuccessful as a Klingon trying to learn the rules of a Federation dance-off!
Adam Brody
As a gamer, I remember in the third season of “New Girl,” I came across an episode titled “Exes” where Adam Brody, who played Berkley (an ex of Jess’), appeared. In this episode, Jess was trying to convince Nick that it’s possible to be friends with exes, so she introduced him to Berkley. However, things didn’t go as planned when she found out his real intentions, making her realize that not all exes can truly remain just friends.
Quinta Brunson
Prior to becoming the Emmy-winning creator and star of the popular ABC comedy, “Abbott Elementary”, Quinta Brunson made a brief appearance in the TV series “New Girl”. In the Season 7 episode titled “Mario”, she was seen when Nick was attempting to propose to Jess. However, an unexpected event occurred as Jess adopted a dog, disrupting his plans. Brunson portrayed a restaurant host whom Nick conversed with over the phone during the plan adjustments.
Stephen Amell
Actor Stephen Amell, famously known for portraying Green Arrow over eight seasons on The CW, made appearances in a few episodes during Season 1 of New Girl. He took on the role of Cece’s unkind boyfriend Kyle in “The 23rd” and “Valentine’s Day.” However, their relationship comes to an end in the latter episode when Cece discovers her feelings for Schmidt.
Jessica Biel
Actress Jessica Biel, known for her roles in “7th Heaven” and “The Sinner,” made an appearance on “New Girl” during the Season 4 premiere titled “The Last Wedding.” In this episode, when the group attends another wedding, Biel portrays a single woman who finds herself vying with Jess for the affections of its best man (played by Reid Scott).
Justin Long
Justin Long featured prominently during the debut season of “New Girl,” portraying Paul Genzlinger, a music teacher who is a coworker of Jess. In the series’ first Thanksgiving episode, their relationship begins to develop. Many viewers see Paul as a male counterpart of Jess. After dating for approximately a month and then splitting up, Long returned in Season 4’s “Walk Of Shame” episode.
Linda Cardellini
In Season 3 of “New Girl”, fans were introduced to Jess’s sister, Abby Day, who was portrayed by Linda Cardellini over a span of three episodes. Known for her role in “Dead To Me”, Cardellini brought to life Abby, a character that stands in stark contrast to the show’s main actress Zooey Deschanel. Jess often finds herself ashamed of Abby’s actions when she moves into the loft following Jess’s intervention in getting her released from prison.
Alexandra Daddario
Actress Alexandra Daddario, best known for her roles in ‘Baywatch’ and ‘The White Lotus’, made a guest appearance on the sitcom ‘New Girl’. In two episodes of the show, she portrayed Michelle, one of the attractive new neighbors who caught the attention of Schmidt, Winston, and Coach. The trio tried to impress her after their initial encounter left room for improvement. Daddario appeared in the episodes titled “Mars Landing” from Season 3 and “Goldmine” from Season 4.
Andy Samberg
For quite a few years, New Girl and Brooklyn Nine-Nine were both big comedies airing on FOX at the same time. So in Season 6, the networks decided to crossover the comedies with a special New York episode for New Girl. While the friends are in the Big Apple, Jess gets some help from Andy Samberg’s Jake Peralta and the other cast. (The cast of New Girl was also on an episode of B99 called “The Night Shift” that aired the same week in 2016).
Peter Gallagher
In several episodes of “New Girl,” the character Peter Gallagher portrayed the role of Gavin, Schmidt’s father. This actor, renowned for his performances in films like “American Beauty” and “While You Were Sleeping,” made a memorable appearance as Schmidt’s estranged father. The vineyard owner debuted in the Season 5 episode titled “D-Day,” where Jess was helping Schmidt with wedding arrangements. Gallagher’s portrayal of Schmidt’s distant dad was spot on.
Randall Park
Prior to attaining stardom in shows like “Fresh Off The Boat”, “Always Be My Maybe” and “WandaVision”, Randall Park had a brief appearance in the first season of “New Girl”. He played an employee at a phone company, sporting frosted tips, who joked about Nick’s exceptionally low credit score.
Natasha Lyonne
Back in the day, I was just a small-time character actor, but then came my breakthrough roles that put me on the map. People know me as Nicky Nichols from “Orange is the New Black,” Nadia Vulvokov from “Russian Doll,” and Charlie Koontz from “Poker Face.” But before these iconic parts, I made a brief appearance in the third episode ever of “New Girl” titled “Wedding.” I played Gretchen Nelson, a friend of Schmidt’s, and it turned out we shared an interesting dynamic – he claimed to dislike me, yet couldn’t resist sleeping with me at every wedding we attended together. Quite the conundrum!
Dylan O’Brien
Dylan O’Brien, famously known for his role in Teen Wolf, portrays the individual with whom Jess Day lost her virginity during high school prom. In the “Virgins” episode from Season 2, Jess encounters him years later, but instead of a potential romantic encounter, their reunion turns into an awkward and embarrassing situation for both parties.
Brenda Song
Actress Brenda Song, known from “The Suite Life of Zack & Cody,” appeared in several episodes during Season 2 and one in Season 3 as Daisy, a potential love interest for Winston. However, their relationship didn’t last long. Interestingly, Song also starred as a guest in what many consider to be the top-ranked episode of “New Girl,” titled “Cooler.
Joey King
Before Joey King was the star of Netflix’s The Kissing Booth movies or the numerous 2024 movies she’s been in like A Family Affair, Uglies and Despicable Me 4, she was a popular child actor who was in Ramona & Beezus with Selena Gomez or the Taylor Swift music video “Mean.” She was also in a Season 1 episode of New Girl called “Bully” as one of Jess’s students.
Carla Gugino
Actress Carla Gugino, recognized for her roles in “Spy Kids” films and collaborations with Mike Flanagan on horror projects, appeared in three episodes of the sitcom “New Girl” in 2012. In these episodes, she portrayed Emma, Schmidt’s new boss. The first episode, titled “Menzies,” features a complex romantic situation where Schmidt enters into a contract with her that doesn’t unfold as expected.
Nick Kroll
Known for his hilarious roles in shows like “The League,” as well as creating “The Kroll Show” and “Big Mouth” on Netflix, Nick Kroll is also recognized for. In Season 2’s “Chicago,” where the characters visit Kroll’s hometown for his father’s funeral, he portrays one of Nick Miller’s siblings, alongside Bill Burr. The duo clearly enjoyed themselves while adopting a Chicago accent, adding some humor to an otherwise emotional episode of “New Girl.
Fred Armisen
In a brief appearance during the fifth season of “New Girl,” renowned comedian Fred Armisen, known for his humorous roles on “Saturday Night Live” and “Portlandia,” portrayed the character Brandon. This guest spot left a lasting impression due to Armisen’s hilarious antics with the main characters. Remember the scenes where he read Schmidt’s romance writing or even dressed up as Jess? Those moments were truly memorable!
