After Paul Said Liz Is A Lot Like Him On Shrinking, I Asked Christa Miller And Bill Lawrence What She Has In Common With Harrison Ford

As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for binge-watching TV shows, I have to say that Shrinking is one of the most intriguing series I’ve come across recently. The characters are well-developed and the storylines are engaging, making it impossible not to get hooked.

Slight spoilers for Shrinking Season 2 are ahead. If you want to get caught up, you can stream the comedy with an Apple TV+ subscription.

Initially, it may not appear that Paul and Liz share many similarities on the series “Shrinking”. For instance, Liz is quite vocal while Paul tends to be more reserved, and Liz seems to lack boundaries compared to Paul who might have too many. However, as we’ve seen in Episode 3 of Season 2, they actually have a lot in common according to the therapist’s assessment. So, when I spoke with Christa Miller, who plays Liz on “Shrinking”, and Bill Lawrence, the show’s co-creator and Miller’s real-life husband, I inquired about what she shares with Harrison Ford, the actor behind Paul.

In Episode 3 of “Shrinking”, Paul encounters Liz and her spouse Derek in his workplace. Upon recognizing Liz, and bringing up the fact that Derek consumed his ice cream, the therapist portrayed by Harrison Ford speaks to Derek.

Indeed, it’s quite remarkable how you’ve created a wonderful life with someone who, in a way, resembles a challenging puzzle. Let me clarify, no disrespect intended. She shares some traits with me – she’s feisty and strong-willed, and that’s even before considering the unique challenges of living with Parkinson’s.

Both of them are known for being “prickly,” but there’s more to them than meets the eye. They are exceptionally loyal, and when they develop feelings for someone, their commitment is unwavering until the very end. Although Paul may not demonstrate it in the same way as Liz by doling out rocks, the depth of their affection for others is truly commendable. Bill Lawrence shared with me that this is a trait Ford and Miller share as well, as he put it:

In actuality, neither of them would be my ideal partner in real life, humor aside… They are both straightforward, blunt, and extremely candid individuals who take time to warm up to someone. By ‘slow to warm,’ I mean they’ll give you a curious look with a raised eyebrow until they feel comfortable enough to trust you, and once that bond is formed, their loyalty is unwavering. At present, my internal chart shows Harrison edging slightly ahead of my wife in terms of our current relationship dynamics.

In a more straightforward manner, let me say this: Setting humor aside for a moment, it’s truly heartwarming to hear such praises, and those qualities certainly align perfectly with the nature of the individuals involved.

Initially, I assumed these performers were polar opposites. A casual glance at their resumes would suggest the same – Miller, renowned for his television roles in comedies such as The Drew Carey Show, appears to be a stark contrast to Ford, who is famed for portraying serious and heroic figures like Han Solo and Indiana Jones.

Through viewing Shrinking and conversing with its creators, I’ve noticed some striking resemblances. Christa Miller also recognized this parallel when she responded to my query by saying:

I love Harrison. Harrison and I don’t suffer fools, and we both have dry senses of humor.

In “Shrinking,” you’ll find those qualities as well, which I greatly appreciate. If you’re looking for an exceptional display of these elements coming together, I recommend revisiting Season 1, Episode 6 of the Apple TV+ series. It’s the episode where Paul consumes something and gets high, leading to them both mocking Brian throughout a party, nicknaming Derek as their “server,” and indulging in popsicles together.

Yet, these entities exhibit substantial variations as well, which Miller humorously highlighted when he remarked to me:

Where we differ is, Harrison likes to play pranks on people, and I’m not into pranks. But yeah, I’m obsessed with Harrison.

Harrison Ford is known for his playful and mischievous nature. During the filming of “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom,” he and Ke Huy Quan pulled a prank on director Steven Spielberg by unexpectedly appearing in a shot with ice cream smeared on their faces, according to Empire. Additionally, Ford often played tricks on movie sets, and his wife Calista Flockhart revealed to the New York Times that they enjoy startling each other, as well as leaving harmless practical jokes like rubber scorpions around their home.

Meanwhile, that is not Christa Miller’s jam.

Yet, there’s an indication that they both possess a remarkable sense of humor and a profound affection for their loved ones. This aspect is quite evident when you tune in to watch new episodes of Shrinking every Wednesday on Apple TV+ as they become available in the 2024 TV schedule.
