As a die-hard Saturday Night Live fan, I can confidently say that the show truly knows how to deliver some spooktacular sketches during Halloween! With a rich history of bringing laughter and chills to our screens, SNL never fails to impress.
This October offers a blend of mischief and sweet surprises, and this year, the 50th season of Saturday Night Live has served up several fresh Halloween sketches featuring Hosts Michael Keaton and Ariana Grande. (Can anything be more chilling than “My Best Friend’s House,” a musical number revolving around a serial killer?)
Every autumn when the chill sets in, I eagerly await one constant – the exceptional Halloween sketches from SNL. Over the years, they’ve never failed to deliver mind-blowing creativity during Halloween. Not only do these sketches keep me entertained, but they also serve as a treasure trove of inspiration for my Halloween costumes!
As a fan, I can never predict what chuckles are hiding just around the bend while watching an SNL Halloween sketch. This year, we’ve gathered 20 of the funniest ones, featuring iconic moments like David S. Pumpkins and Chance the Rapper’s “Spooky Song” from Season 23 of The Voice, as well as some classic, side-splitting sketches that you may have overlooked in years past.
Saturday Night Live‘s best Halloween sketches
“A Girl’s Halloween”

As a die-hard fan, I couldn’t help but chuckle as Aidy Bryant, Cecily Strong, and Vanessa Bayer decided on a peaceful evening together only for it to take an unexpected turn. The ensuing chaos was nothing short of side-splittingly hilarious!
“Stranger Things”
When “Stranger Things” initially gained immense popularity, “SNL” decided to explore this phenomenon, posing the question: Where were Lucas’ parents during the entire ordeal? Leslie Jones and Kenan Thompson portrayed elderly characters who provided an answer in one of the funniest Halloween skits ever produced.
“Chad Horror Movie”
https://nbcunbcblogprod.su.apps.nbcuni.com/embeddable-player/34846/1/1
Over the course of eight seasons on Saturday Night Live, Pete Davidson’s “Chad” sketches really shone. In a sketch inspired by the Scream series, titled “John Mulaney’s ‘Chad Horror Movie’,” it was John Mulaney’s character who tried to engage Chad in a sinister game, but Chad appeared less interested or engaged.
“Chad in a Haunted Mansion”
https://nbcunbcblogprod.su.apps.nbcuni.com/embeddable-player/94104/1/1
Isn’t it true that every popular horror movie requires a follow-up? In this 2019 comedy sketch, Host Adele brought to life a captivating ghost who was attempting (but ultimately failing) to frighten the unfazed character named Chad.
“Spooky Song”
https://nbcunbcblogprod.su.apps.nbcuni.com/embeddable-player/3677/1/1
Twice as an SNL host, Chance the Rapper starred in the 2019 Halloween special, and in “Spooky Song,” his character as a ghost amused the audience with a coy approach towards revealing how he met his end. Initially, other spirits in the graveyard expressed frustration until he eventually shared his (embarrassing) past.
“A Frightening Tale”
https://nbcunbcblogprod.su.apps.nbcuni.com/embeddable-player/34848/1/1
Everyone has a tale of discomfort from being trapped in a lengthy conversation they’d rather avoid. In this SNL digital short, Seth Meyers, Melissa Villaseñor, Heidi Gardner, Alex Moffat, and Beck Bennett gather around a campfire to hear Meyers recount his cringeworthy, awkward predicament.
“My Best Friend’s House”
https://nbcunbcblogprod.su.apps.nbcuni.com/embeddable-player/93854/1/1
On October 12, 2024, the pre-recorded musical skit is accompanied by Ariana Grande’s melodious voice. This seemingly innocent skit featuring singing furniture takes an unusually grim and surprising twist in a video with her as one of the stars.
“Office Halloween Party”
https://nbcunbcblogprod.su.apps.nbcuni.com/embeddable-player/34840/1/1
Title Reworked: “Spooktacular Office Halloween Bash” – Lights up the mundane atmosphere of typical office Halloween gatherings, with Host Kumail Nanjiani and the team enjoying the festivities until they receive a chilling call from their supervisor (Beck Bennett). He delivers grim news: They must refrain from eating the cake he prepared for them, or face consequences. To make matters worse, everyone has already indulged in a piece of the forbidden dessert. Oh no!
“Chucky”
https://nbcunbcblogprod.su.apps.nbcuni.com/embeddable-player/21334/1/1
In an intriguing twist of fate, if Chucky, the menacing plaything from the Child’s Play movies and Peacock series, found himself in a typical 9-to-5 office job, well, here I am, imagining myself stepping into that role. Picture me, a seemingly harmless desk toy, but with a sinister twist – I’m your HR representative now, Chucky’s new coworker. And oh boy, the tension between us is palpable as we navigate through office politics and paperwork, all while trying to keep our deadly secrets hidden. That’s the premise of this hilarious sketch, with Sarah Sherman slipping into Chucky’s knife-wielding shoes and Host Jake Gyllenhaal portraying the stressed-out HR rep who’s about to find out that not all toys are as innocent as they seem!
“Weekend Update: Jimmy Fallon Trick-or-Treating”
During his tenure as a cast member on the “Tonight Show,” Jimmy Fallon also had some memorable musical moments, including his 1998 “Weekend Update” performance where he sang spooky Halloween versions of popular ’90s tunes.
“Vincent Price’s Halloween Special II”
https://nbcunbcblogprod.su.apps.nbcuni.com/embeddable-player/33847/1/1
Bill Hader once again showcased his spot-on impersonation of Vincent Price, a renowned horror film star, for the fifth time in this skit. The guests invited to Hader’s eerie abode by his Price character included Judy Garland (played by Kristen Wiig) and John F. Kennedy (portrayed by the host, Jon Hamm).
“Ghost Chasers”
In this spot-on parody of the many ghost-tracking shows out there, a group of paranormal researchers visits a haunted mansion. The resident skeptic (Leslie Jones) has quite a few concerns, and the resulting pandemonium is hilarious.
“Long Island Medium”
https://nbcunbcblogprod.su.apps.nbcuni.com/embeddable-player/78698/1/1
It’s common knowledge that Theresa Caputo, famous from the show “Long Island Medium,” has the ability to communicate with the deceased. However, her extraordinary abilities can sometimes interfere with her normal, everyday life. Whether Theresa is at the grocery store or using a restroom, she can instantly reduce people to tears by describing in an unexplainable way how their loved ones passed away.
“Firelight”
https://nbcunbcblogprod.su.apps.nbcuni.com/embeddable-player/34838/1/1
In 2009, a hilarious take-off of the popular series “Twilight” titled “Taylor Swift’s Twilight” premiered a week beyond Halloween. Despite its post-Halloween release, it’s undeniably eerie and deserves no exclusion. The comedy sketch features Taylor Swift as a teenage girl who develops a romantic interest in the enigmatic new student, Phillip Frank (portrayed by Bill Hader), who possesses an unsettling green skin tone and neck bolts. This character becomes unusually agitated whenever fire is present, which may remind you of a certain vampire series that could have benefited from more Frankenstein monsters!
“Graveyard Song”
https://nbcunbcblogprod.su.apps.nbcuni.com/embeddable-player/34842/1/1
In 2014, I stumbled upon another delightful addition to the “spooky spirits serenading a couple, and at least one of them has an unusual arrangement” genre. This time around, it’s a guy (Pete Davidson) and his date (Sasheer Zamata) who encounter a group of ghostly characters, including Paul and Phil – played by host Jim Carrey and Taran Killam. The rest of the spectral crew don’t quite mesh with these two attention-grabbing ghost buddies, whose antics are nothing short of hilariously normal.
“The Walking Dead: Black or Zombie?”
https://nbcunbcblogprod.su.apps.nbcuni.com/embeddable-player/33443/1/1
SNL pulled off a spot-on parody of The Walking Dead with 2013 Host Kevin Hart.
“Weekend Update: Stefon on Halloween’s Hottest Tips”
https://nbcunbcblogprod.su.apps.nbcuni.com/embeddable-player/34844/1/1
During the time of year when things get a little eerie and you’re in search of a good time, you can always count on Bill Hader’s character Stefon for some great recommendations.
“Hallmark Horror”
https://nbcunbcblogprod.su.apps.nbcuni.com/embeddable-player/38326/1/1
In this fictional Hallmark movie trailer, comedian Nate Bargatze, who hosts Seasons 49 and 50, portrays a serial killer with an unusual soft spot for an old high school acquaintance. As the story unfolds, his former sweetheart visits from New York City, sparking a romantic connection – albeit one tinged with the knowledge that he still yearns to eliminate her and her entire family.
“Haunted Elevator” (ft. David S. Pumpkins)
https://nbcunbcblogprod.su.apps.nbcuni.com/embeddable-player/34440/1/1
In this timeless SNL Halloween sketch, Tom Hanks, as a Five-Timers club member, portrayed the enigmatic David S. Pumpkins, an oddity within a haunted elevator experience. Characters played by Beck Bennett and Kate McKinnon struggled to comprehend why David S. Pumpkins was supposed to be terrifying, but their numerous inquiries were left unanswered.
“Horror Choreographer”
https://nbcunbcblogprod.su.apps.nbcuni.com/embeddable-player/94397/1/1
You might’ve seen the many TikToks of various Michael Meyers dancing and dropping it low — but did you ever wonder where Michael learned his sick moves? Enter Michael Keaton’s “stunt movement coordinator” character, who instructs the talent on how to stab with sass.
