Jeff Koons and Marilyn Minter Amongst 11 NYC Artists Opening Their Studios to the Public

As a lifelong art enthusiast who has scoured countless galleries and exhibitions, I can confidently say that this unique opportunity to peek into the studios of some of New York’s most renowned artists is nothing short of a dream come true! The chance to witness the genesis of these otherworldly concepts firsthand, in the very spaces where they take form, is an experience that will stay with me for a lifetime.

Artist studios carry a mystical charm, much like the depictions found in magazine editorials. Some boast bustling assistants, designer furniture, and architectural marvels, crafted by renowned architects. Yet, many resemble city offices or warehouses, equipped with filing cabinets, improvised sofas on old pallets, and IKEA workstations. Despite their varying aesthetics and environments, these studios serve as the creative crucibles where extraordinary ideas, paintings, and sculptures are initially born.

If you’re curious about the work habits of successful artists, 11 artists are offering a rare opportunity to visit their studios, all proceeds going towards the IFPDA Foundation’s mission to promote print education for future collectors and curators. The price for this unique experience is $1,000 USD.

“Each artist joining the event calls New York their home and features an impressive lineup including Katherine Bradford, Leonardo Drew, Jeffrey Gibson, Rashid Johnson, Jeff Koons, Vera Lutter, Joel Mesler, Marilyn Minter, Tschabalala Self, Joel Shapiro, and Mickalene Thomas. According to New York curator Sharon Coplan, the IFPDA is a significant organization for galleries and publishers of limited-edition prints and multiples, making it an honor to be admitted as a member. The IFPDA Print Fair serves as the prime destination to explore the latest releases from publishers like Two Palms Press, Gemini G.E.L., and Pace Prints, along with esteemed dealers such as Hill Stone for vintage master prints.

Art prints can bring significant value, but they also offer a more affordable way for art enthusiasts to own pieces from their favorite creators. The advancements in print technology, led by studios like Avant Arte and Make-Ready in London, strive to mimic the quality of paintings. Coplan noted that all the artists on this remarkable list have produced prints with IFPDA member organizations, making the process a natural fit. “The artists were incredibly generous in inviting supporters of the IFPDA Foundation into their studios,” Coplan continued. “These behind-the-scenes experiences will be enjoyable and unforgettable.

The organizers aim to gather approximately $60,000 USD, a sum that will support exhibitions, internships, and research opportunities for students at historically Black colleges and universities. For further details about registration, please check out the IFPDA website.
