As a veteran gamer of hip-hop culture and a connoisseur of all things DOOM, I must say this latest announcement from Stones Throw Records has sent my heart racing faster than a 16-bit Super Nintendo game on steroids! The reissue of Madvillain’s Demos and the Audiophile Edition of Madvillainy is like finding a hidden secret treasure map that leads straight to the lost city of hip-hop gold.
Stones Throw Records is honoring the iconic collaboration between MF DOOM and Madlib on their groundbreaking album, Madvillainy, by releasing limited edition vinyl LPs featuring demos and audiophile versions.
For the very first time on vinyl, Madvillain’s Demos, previously released on tape in 2008 as part of a box set and later for Cassette Store Day in September 2013, will be made available. The original mastering engineer, Dave Cooley, is back to refine the demos. Additionally, an insert featuring Eric Coleman’s contact sheets from the album cover shoot is included.
In simpler terms, the “Audiophile Edition” is a special tribute to the completed album. It is re-mastered at 45rpm and pressed onto high-quality 180g vinyl. The lyrics of the album are printed inside the jacket, which is made from sturdy tip-on cardboard. To keep it safe, the record is enclosed in premium rice paper sleeves.
In March of 2004, Madvillainy was unveiled, a work often hailed as the masterpiece of the late MF DOOM. This album has earned acclaim for being one of the greatest hip-hop albums ever made and is frequently featured among the top music selections in current “best of” lists.
You can now pre-order MF DOOM and Madlib’s “Madvillainy” through the Stones Throw webstore, with shipping happening exclusively on Black Friday this year. However, a wider release isn’t until 2025.
