As a dedicated follower and admirer of Indian cinema, I have always been captivated by the stories of resilience and determination that emanate from the lives of our beloved actors. Among these, the journey of Anupam Kher stands out as a beacon of inspiration.
There are actors, and then there are actors who specialize in creating memorable characters that keep audiences captivated for many years. Unlike stars, these character artists don’t seek fame to validate their talent, but are instead appreciated for their significant impact on Hindi cinema. Today, let’s delve into the life of a seasoned actor who once posted his resume on LinkedIn. With over 500 films under his belt in an impressive career, he views each new role as the ‘greatest’ yet. Meet Anupam Kher, an actor whose passion for acting was ignited in high school, where he borrowed money from his mother to enroll in a course, slept at train stations, and went on to play Shah Rukh Khan’s father in a movie.
Anupam Kher made his film debut in 1984 with the movie “Saaransh,” which he referred to in a recent Instagram post as a critical year for him. Indeed, 1984 was a pivotal year, as at that time, Kher was only 28 but played the role of a 65-year-old man in Mahesh Bhatt’s direction. The esteemed actor has often spoken about his challenging journey before joining the entertainment industry. Let us recall how he discovered acting as his calling.
In an interview with Humans of Bombay back in 2019, Anupam Kher looked back on his life and shared that his desire to become an actor stemmed from participating in a school play during his ninth grade years. He admitted that at first, he struggled to memorize and deliver his lines effectively, causing them to be given to another student who subsequently forgot them during the performance.
The Saaransh actor jokingly mentioned that he improvised a line in what sounded like broken English, causing the audience to burst into laughter.
In the same interview, Anupam Kher also shared an incident where he borrowed money from his mother, Dulari Kher, to participate in an acting audition. He remembered seeing an ad for a four-year acting course in Chandigarh and needing Rs 100 to take part in the tryout. The esteemed actor confessed that he deceived his mom by telling her he was going on a picnic instead.
Yet, fortune seemed to smile upon him as his audition was approved. Subsequently, he embarked on his studies within the city.
After that, Anupam Kher moved to Mumbai (Bombay), where he found a job as a teacher at a small drama school. This school offered limited space for teaching and an extremely small room for him to live in. Despite these challenges, Kher continued to teach, attend auditions, and perform in plays. At one point, the actor experienced severe financial difficulties and was unable to secure work. During this difficult period, Anupam Kher resorted to sleeping on beaches and railway platforms.
In his latest Instagram post, Anupam Kher spoke about sleeping at railway stations in his initial career. “…Had slept on railway stations at times because I didn’t have money to rent a room…”
Anupam Kher is primarily recognized for his roles in films such as Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Khosla Ka Ghosla, Apna Sapna Money Money, and numerous others. In Aditya Chopra’s 1995 film, DDLJ, Anupam portrayed Shah Rukh Khan’s father, a role that continues to be fondly remembered by its audience due to the heartwarming bond shared with SRK.
In his professional life, Anupam Kher will appear in an upcoming movie titled “Vijay 69”. This intriguing, day-to-day story sees Anupam portray the character of Vijay, a 69-year-old man with aspirations to compete in a triathlon. Additionally, Chunky Panday is featured in an important role within this film.
