Fantastic Beasts Star Eddie Redmayne Offers Update on the Harry Potter Franchise

As a seasoned movie-goer who has witnessed the rise and fall of many a silver screen saga, I must say that Eddie Redmayne’s recent statement about the future of the Fantastic Beasts franchise leaves me with a sense of both relief and a tinge of melancholy. Relief, for it seems the era of Newt Scamander’s misadventures is finally coming to an end, and melancholy, because I have grown rather fond of this quirky Magizoologist over the years.

The Oscar-winning actor, Eddie Redmayne, shared some thoughts (that might be seen as either disheartening or reassuring depending on your perspective towards the series) regarding the future of the “Fantastic Beasts” series. In an interview with Comicbook.com about his upcoming TV show, “The Day of the Jackal,” Redmayne suggested that it’s unlikely we’ll see his character, Newt Scamander, appear on the big screen again.

Based on my understanding, it seems Newt might not appear again. This is quite an open statement, and yes, you’d be correct. As far as I am aware, that’s the extent of his appearances. However, to confirm, you would need to talk to the folks at Warner Bros. and J.K Rowling. But from what I know, it appears he might make a brief reappearance in the Universal world opening in Florida, where you could potentially catch a glimpse of what he was doing in Paris.

Starting with “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” in 2016, this series delves into an unexplored chapter of the Wizarding World, transporting viewers back to earlier times featuring a younger Dumbledore during the First Wizarding War, happening concurrently with World War II. The most recent glimpse of the prequel series was in 2022’s “Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore.” Here, Albus Dumbledore assigns Newt Scamander and his companions a crucial mission to thwart the malicious plans of Grindelwald’s dark wizard army, with Mads Mikkelsen stepping into the role previously played by Johnny Depp.

What Went Wrong With the Fantastic Beasts Franchise?

Regrettably, instead of building on the success of the Harry Potter film franchise, most people found Fantastic Beasts to be an underwhelming revisit to the Wizarding World. Initially, it was intended to create a five-movie series, but according to Eddie Redmayne, only three films will tell the story of Newt Scamander.

Compared to its predecessor, “Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore” was generally seen as an advancement, according to Rotten Tomatoes (with “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” scoring 74% and “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” falling drastically to 36%, whereas “Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore” currently holds a rating of 46%). However, the film still garnered a variety of opinions and underperformed significantly at the box office, ultimately becoming the lowest-grossing movie in the cherished series.

Despite Eddie Redmayne’s certainty that Newt Scamander’s story has concluded, director David Yates, who oversaw all three Fantastic Beasts films, expressed a year ago that the series will return for a fourth installment at some point.

I’m confident that we’ll resume at some point. However, I haven’t had any recent contact with Jo, producer David Heyman, or Warner Bros. We’re simply taking a break for now. It’s refreshing, actually.

Eddie Redmayne will take on a new role, departing from the timid Newt of “The Day of the Jackal,” as he steps into the shoes of an elusive assassin who finds himself up against a relentless British intelligence officer in a high-stakes game of cat and mouse across Europe. Catch this series starting on November 7, 2024, only on Peacock.
