As a woman who has navigated through the intricate labyrinth of society, I find Saoirse Ronan‘s courage and wisdom deeply inspiring. Her poignant commentary on women’s safety during an interview on The Graham Norton Show resonates profoundly with my own experiences and those of countless other women.
Actress Saoirse Ronan has addressed the intense response from fans after a popular video emerged from an episode of the U.K.’s “The Graham Norton Show,” during which she emphasized women’s safety in conversation with Denzel Washington, Paul Mescal, and Eddie Redmayne.
Last week on BBC One’s talk show, an Irish actress made an appearance to publicize Steve McQueen’s film Blitz. Meanwhile, during the promotional rounds for Gladiator II, actors Mescal and Washington were present. As for Redmayne, he was there to discuss his role in Sky series The Day of the Jackal. After Redmayne shared that he had learned to use a phone as a weapon during his training for the assassin character, Mescal jokingly questioned who would actually have the time to retrieve their phone if they were under attack.
Ronan interjected during their conversation: “Isn’t that something women often ponder? Correct, ladies?” The audience responded with a round of applause.
The scene from the television program sparked a torrent of comments on social media platforms, with numerous users swiftly noting it served as an illustration of men’s lack of understanding concerning women’s safety issues. On Wednesday, Ronan stated on “The Ryan Turbidy Show” broadcast on Virgin Radio U.K. that the response has been “extraordinary.
This was certainly not the outcome I anticipated, and it wasn’t my intention to create a stir… There seems to be something quite revealing about our current society and the level of openness women desire in their relationships with men.
She described the fact that a conversation had been opened on the topic “amazing” and said the interaction with Mescal “felt very similar to like when I am at dinner with a bunch of my friends and I will always make the point that, well, this is actually an experience that we go through every single day, 100 percent.”
She also said, “This makes it easier for more women to say, ‘Yes, indeed, let’s discuss our experiences.’
The actress from “Lady Bird” remembered seeing the interview, saying, “A few of us girls were with my spouse, and we commented that it seemed similar to a staged phone conversation.” Her co-star from “Slow Horses”, Jack Lowden, asked, “What do you mean by a fake phone call?
Ronan pointed out that many women, as a means of self-protection, instinctively use the trick of feigning phone calls when they’re on their own. Interestingly, they acquire this skill without explicitly discussing it with other women or realizing it’s part of a broader survival strategy.
