As a seasoned gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the dynamic world of international television and co-productions, I can’t help but feel a sense of admiration for Rola Bauer‘s extraordinary career journey. From her early days at Tandem Communications to her recent tenure at Amazon Studios, she has consistently proven herself as a trailblazer in the industry.
Rola Bauer, a renowned international television producer, has decided to leave her position as the head of all English-language scripted streaming TV shows at Amazon Studios. This news was shared by both Bauer and Amazon on Wednesday.
Following many years working at a prominent streaming platform, where hit shows featuring stars such as Sophie Turner, Bill Nighy, Riz Ahmed, and Robin Wright were produced, Bauer expressed a desire to reconnect with her entrepreneurial background.
In May 2021, while serving as President of International Television Productions at MGM, Bauer found herself leading the studio after it was purchased by Amazon for $8.5 billion. Post this merger, she was appointed to oversee a fresh division, focusing on English-language originals produced globally, excluding the United States.
Over a span of two years, their team has churned out six different series. Some of these upcoming shows include the suspenseful series ‘Harlan Coben’s Lazarus’, featuring Sam Claflin and Nighy; the crime drama ‘Haven’ with Turner in the lead; the humorous half-hour series ‘Quarter Life’, penned by and starring Ahmed; and ‘The Girlfriend’, an adaptation of the Michelle Frances novel, directed by Wright and co-starring Olivia Cooke, Laurie Davidson, and Waleed Zuaiter. All these shows have completed filming and will be launched on Amazon Prime within the next 18 months.
Bauer’s group and worldwide productions in English will merge with the bigger Amazon MGM Studios team, with updates going directly to the Head of Television at Amazon Studios, Vernon Sanders.
According to reports, Amazon announced that Bauer’s departure was amicable – a term one executive playfully referred to as a “respectful separation.” However, it’s worth noting that Bauer is leaving at a time when Amazon is changing its international production strategy. The new plan involves two main areas:
Bauer is a trailblazer when it comes to international television collaborations. The production company Tandem Communications, which she established with Tim Halkin in 1999, successfully arranged financing for the Emmy-nominated miniseries “The Pillars of the Earth” (2010), a joint production among Germany, Canada, Britain, and Hungary. Additionally, Tandem was instrumental in producing the crime drama series “Crossing Lines,” featuring the late Donald Sutherland. This show was broadcast on NBC in the U.S., but it received funding from France, Germany, and Belgium.
Co-production, a method where multiple parties collaborate on creating high-quality shows, is gaining popularity again among broadcasters globally due to the need to produce top-tier programs with increasingly limited budgets. Thus, it’s not likely that Bauer will be unemployed for an extended period.
