I Re-Watched Child's Play 2 For The First Time Since Childhood, And I Still Love It (For An Entirely Different Reason)

As a child of the ’80s and ’90s, I can confidently say that revisiting the horror classics of my youth is always a thrilling journey down memory lane. Recently, I found myself rewatching Child’s Play 2 on Netflix, a movie that had given me nightmares for years as a kid. Now, with the wisdom of age and a sense of humor, I can confidently say it’s still a classic, but in a way that makes me chuckle rather than cry myself to sleep.

As Halloween draws near, it’s always thrilling to rekindle memories of the most chilling horror movies ever made. Recently, I found myself diving back into a classic horror flick from my youth, thanks to my Netflix subscription. I was intrigued to see if Child’s Play 2, a movie that once sent shivers down my spine, still held the same enchantment as it did years ago. For those who are eagerly waiting for my verdict, the answer is affirmative, but my appreciation for it has evolved remarkably.

In my younger years, I discarded a clown doll due to the belief that it could transform into Chucky, the infamous doll, and attempt to harm me. This experience was truly terrifying, which is why I’ve avoided rewatching it for so long. However, now that I’m 35, I can safely say that it remains a classic film, yet its excessive and absurd nature is almost laughable. I must clarify before proceeding that due to a traumatic childhood incident, I’ve only watched “Child’s Play 2” from the franchise. So, please be understanding as I explain why this movie is objectively amusing from my perspective.

The Violence Is Ludicrously Over The Top

Given TopMob’s compilation showcases Chucky’s most ingenious slayings, it’s safe to say the character has a knack for killing people in unique manners. However, the deaths depicted in this film are so absurdly excessive, you might find yourself chuckling at some of them. The scene where the toy maker receives doll eyes forcefully inserted into his eye sockets is quite memorable, but let’s not forget about the two kills in this movie that utilize an air pump!

As a die-hard fan, I must confess that Child’s Play 2 is a rollercoaster of emotions – it’s gory, yet so absurd at times that you find yourself chuckling at the sheer ridiculousness of it all. Take for instance, a doll brutally murdering a teacher with a yardstick! Or tripping up the foster father on the stairs and causing an instant fatality. It’s wild, there’s no denying that, but the preposterous deaths in this movie are not just confined to the most gruesome scenes – they’re a bizarre spectacle that keeps you hooked!

At times, Chucky can appear comically absurd even when attempting to be intimidating. The scene where the toy executive is panicking in his car while Chucky points a miniature gun at him had me on the verge of hysterical laughter. It’s preposterous to imagine that such a fake gun could have ended up in his hands for this elaborate prank, making it all the more amusing. I’m not trying to belittle other scary dolls, but Annabelle wouldn’t have the wit to pull off something so creatively terrifying. As a child, it was frightening, but as an adult, it provided some of the most uproarious moments in the film.

A Lot Of Chucky’s Movement Feels Really Dated

1990 marked the release of “Child’s Play 2”. If you’re curious about how far technology like animatronics and visual effects have progressed since then, this film is worth watching. Despite some groundbreaking moments that were state-of-the-art in its time, the animatronics in this movie appear rather outdated after over three decades. At times they look robust, but at others, they resemble a worn-out Disney World animatronic nearing the end of its lifespan.

In certain instances, Chucky exhibits peculiar ventriloquist doll-like actions reminiscent of old Hollywood productions, where it’s usually evident that a doll is standing in for an actor. For example, when Kyle attempts to run him over with a car, he swiftly moves aside like Kermit the Frog darting behind the curtain to begin “The Muppet Show.

In the Chucky series, I suppose some technological aspects might have been enhanced, but they seem to suit the character quite nicely even if they weren’t. Remember, Chucky is a doll, and a significant portion of the films revolves around Charles Lee Ray’s exasperation at being trapped within it instead of a human body. Since he recognizes how absurd the situation is, it allows us, as viewers, to have a bit of a chuckle too.

It Was Hilarious To Rewatch A Movie That Terrified Me As A Kid And Laugh

The image of Chucky exploding haunted my nightmares for years as a child, and watching it as an adult, all I could do was laugh. There’s some real camp to this movie that I couldn’t possibly appreciate when I was little. I think what was probably making it the most hilarious was that it scared me so bad I waited this long into adulthood to finally watch it again, only to realize it wasn’t as bad as I remember.

I Watched Bride of Chucky, And Now I Think It’s The Ultimate Couples’ Halloween Movie

I believe it brought out one of the genuine pleasures of Halloween – conquering fears you once harbored. Some may argue that the Child’s Play franchise falls into the category of horror movies that aren’t particularly terrifying, but for me, it served as a reminder of past traumas that had an impact on me when I first watched it.

Is anyone else still eager to brave the town’s haunted house despite the fear and tears along the way? Perhaps I simply crave the challenge, or maybe I feel empowered by overcoming such a daunting experience.

Thrilled to explore more of the Child’s Play series as I’ve managed to overcome my fear at last, and I hope that some of my criticisms towards the second film may soften over time. Unfortunately, the Chucky TV series was canceled, which is a bummer since I was eager to watch it now that I’m ready. However, I trust TopMob’s Ryan LaBee’s decision to let it go as I’m still relatively new to the franchise. Maybe when I get a chance to see it, I’ll share his view!

For folks keen on watching the sequel to “Child’s Play” this Halloween, you can stream it conveniently on Netflix. If, like many others, you found this film chilling as a child and haven’t revisited it for a while, I strongly suggest giving it another watch – there’s plenty of laughter to be had!
