As a seasoned gamer who’s seen my fair share of horror movies, let me tell you, the voice behind The Substance in this year’s standout film is nothing short of chilling. I’ve played games with some creepy AI voices, but Yann Bean takes the cake. He’s the devil in disguise, seductive yet menacing, and he’s the unsung hero of this movie.
In the remarkable horror film “The Substance”, Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley have garnered significant recognition for their powerful performances (and rightfully so). However, another actor named Yann Bean, who voices the title procedure character, seems to be flying under the radar. Despite not appearing on screen, his performance is crucial to the story, striking a perfect balance between alluring and ominous tones. Writer/director Coralie Fargeat acknowledges that his impact on the film was substantial.
During a conversation with the filmmaker last month prior to the release of “The Substance” in cinemas, my initial query was about discovering the voice of The Substance. She shared that locating the ideal actor for the role was challenging, but the audition process ultimately discovered Yann Bean, who significantly enhanced the movie. According to Fargeat, this was a significant turning point.
As a fanatic, I recognized that voice required an otherworldly quality – dark as the devil’s own, yet inviting, seductive, and heavy with gravitas. The search was arduous, but fortune smiled upon me when I discovered a talented American actor residing in Paris who brought our vision to life. The synergy was palpable; it was as if his voice had been crafted for the role. Upon hearing it during post-production, the atmosphere of the scene transformed instantly, capturing the essence we sought.
In the trailers for “The Substance”, Yann Bean is the character who manufactures and supplies The Substance to Demi Moore’s Elisabeth Sparkle and Margaret Qualley’s Sue in the movie. He serves as the voice promoting the procedure, and he is the one who takes calls when new orders are placed or complaints are made. Although his voice doesn’t seem to have a personal agenda or will, it does provide the characters with the means to bring about their own demise while emphasizing the importance of maintaining balance among them.
Coralie Fargeat shared that she herself lent her voice to The Substance during production. However, it transformed into a distinct character when Yann Bean was discovered for the film.
During filming, I handled all the voiceovers for temporary recordings. Eventually, these recordings imbued The Substance with a distinct quality – a sense of enigma, strength, allure, and peril combined. Essentially, it took on a devilish persona.
Following an astonishing triumph at Cannes Film Festival this past summer (claiming the prestigious Best Screenplay award) and receiving universal praise from critics (I awarded it my top rating of five stars in my TopMob review), “The Substance” is now ready for home viewing, perfectly timed for Halloween. This intense exploration of body horror will be available on Mubi from October 31st, making it a film not to miss as the standout movie of 2024 so far.
